plotting craziness
« on: October 14, 2004, 08:56:02 AM »
I have a question concerning something that happened this morning at my office. I came in this morning to find about 50 blank d size sheets in the plotter. i went over to the que and this is what it said and it said it was sent from my computer but i shut down my computer before i left. There were also about 5 copy jobs behind it which someone ran from our scanner. our it guy just updated our server last weekend and all of our printers have been wacked out. does this have something to do with that. if so why was i the unfortunate victim?

so i guess nobody knows huh was just curious. our it guy just came and took me to the room to view the log and he didn't see anything suspicious but he gave me full access to the printers from my computer. he told me also that word is getting around that i'm the computer wiz so they are going to start having me do the database backup which he'll be showing me how to do shortly

Sorry Dan,
The only thing I could think of would be if someone had sent a very large print to your plotter which took a long time to spool through, during which time, additional jobs accumulated behind it in the que....maybe they didn't come through until after everyone had left.  I dunno...Still, it sounds pretty odd.  :?

yeah it's weird i just set a few drawings through 6 sheets should have printed and i go over to the que and look and the number of sheets says 106. i then tried to print directly to the device bypassing the server and it prints fine so i've isolated it to the server not liking something about my setup but i don't know what i'm not using any of the plot routines from here just straight acad?

Did you change the 'Number of copies" to something other than 1?

Try reinstalling the printer from the Add Printer Wizard.  ???

i'm not really in charge of doing that sort of thing. the weird thing is i don't even remember printing anything at the end of the day yesterday. i'm not going to mess with the printers at all i'll let the it guy do that, don't wanna step in a pile of sh** tryin to take matters into my own hands. it seemed to be working fine up until yesterday though i don't get it? anyhow i'll keep ya posted

Installing a printer is NO PROBLEM!  Unless, of course, they've put permissions on your PC so you can't do it.
If you don't want to do it, I would suggest that you ask your IT guy to do so...Should only take him 2 minutes, if that.

yeah i'll get him to do it it's supposed to go through the server so that's the part i'm concerned about. i don't want to do anything because if i encounter a problem he's going to say i caused it blah blah blah you know the speech

Cant offer you a solution, but Ive experienced similar problems.Ive sent a document to printer on the server and it wouldnt print,I couldnt cancel it and my boss was getting redder by the minute as he was trying to print of some project he wanted to issue.Ive also had problems were one day I can print and other days I cant. This for a number of printers on the network.Ive also had the printer print blank pages and wont stop until the printer is turned off for a couple of minutes, something to do with the memory.Frustrating I understand your problem eloquintet.Until our IT bloke sorts the netwrork out I guess Ill just have to put up with the problems I have.He is convinced theres nothing wrong even when you show him the problem, hell waffle some crap and go into hiding, until you keep sending nagging emails over a number of weeks.Maybe I shouldnt be so critical hes only an engineer who showed some interest in the IT side, next minute hes our IT guru. :)

oh the irony i retraced my foosteps and one of the things i did yesterday was to take ron's nijasettings lisp and modify it as uhum sanity. well i took it out of my startup suite but it continued to run on startup. i put it in the recycle bin and everything seems to have been solved. now i'm wondering what variable could i have in here that could cause so much harm. i like the idea of sanity but...
