Depends on task. If doing mostly queries in a drawing (areas, measurements and stuff) - or testing routines - I drag command window to show 10-15 lines.
When mostly drawing, it stays at 3-4 lines.

3 I guess, That's the command line and two lines for the History.
But I find that sometimes stuff get by without me seeing it.
Like the distance command. the x & y are there but the actual distance has scrolled up out of view.

3 seems to be enough to see distance checks.

I use 3 regularly unless I am debugging a program or doing lots of entity queries.

I have four lines for my command prompt.

The thing that annoys me is when you are checking a distance and the blasted autosave goes off, and your are stuck scrabbling back either by the scroll bar or 'F2' to find out the distances.

Its too bad AutoDesk doesn't maximize the command prompt area so we can maximize the real-estate on the screen.

I found myself hitting it frequently as well, but for the most part, I find it unimportant to see what's going on in the command line (depending on what I'm working on) and since I'd rather maximize the screen for the drawing, I use only one line.

Uhh, put your command line on your second monitor and then it won't matter how many lines you use.. :D

We had that setup when I first started here!  The second monitor was a 14" monochrome (green or orange) P.O.S. that we used for either the command line in AutoCAD (R9), but it was much more useful for Microstation.

Took me three years to get *them* to let me have ONE!!!

Well, once we graduated from DOS to the Wonderful world of Windows 3.1, they ousted the second monitor...or maybe they ousted themselves.  They WERE pretty old!

Well, this should prove my point. I believe it has something to do with precision, as Stig pointed out.

Quote
Distance = 3'-4 5/32",  Angle in XY Plane = 90,  Angle from XY Plane = 0
Delta X = 0'-0",  Delta Y = 3'-4 5/32",   Delta Z = 0'-0"

I typically use 1 line and use F2 if I need history.  I have latley found myself using 0 lines,  I'd rather have the realestate.  I do use a modified distance command that uses and alert box to give me what I want.

How do you copy text from an alert box?

I moved the command line to my 2nd monitor and give it almost the full height, so it is at least 30 lines.  Now I have no need for the text screen.  When I had a single monitor I kept it at three to get as much drawing area as possible.  As a plus, it confuses the engineers and discourages them from watching over my shoulder.

I do 3 lines. That's how many lines the lower part of my trifocals will cover. Plus that's the max my amber monitor will support.

My place won't throw any cash for training, but they don't skimp on the hardware.  My primary monitor is a 17" LCD and they just left my old 19" for the second screen.

training budget

Who needs a training budget, isn't that what 'The Swamp' is for?

I get most of my knowledge thru experimentation, and if that doesn't work I come here and ask the questions.  Usually someone here has the answer to the problem, if not they send us down the correct path.

My bos skimps out on hardware, training and workmanship. As long as he can bill a client for a half A$$ job and get paid for it he is happy.

Sounds like you need a bigger 2nd monitor and a higher resolution.. I typically have the database program I use with AutoCad running all the time on my second monitor, along with the properties box, AND Firefox when I need to "research" something.

My main screen is all AutoCad.  I've got one toolbar across the top so I don't waste any space with cartoons.  I'd use clean screen but, it takes away my properties box.

I use 2 lines, with most of the toolbars removed to maximise screen space, the few tool bars that I have are mostly custom.
