Personally I like the new version. Using Freehand selection by simply clicking and hold down the left mouse button in an empty area and drag the cursor through one or more objects near the ends to be trimmed or extended is the bomb.

You can always add the macro
Code:
[Select]
(command-s "trim")
that will run the previous TRIM command if you like.
