3D reducing pipe on an arc
« on: January 13, 2006, 08:53:29 AM »
What I am trying to accomplish is to draw a 3D reducing 90 degree ell. It would start at 6" and end at 3" and reduce gradually and evenly along an arc. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?

Exactly!

How did you accomplish this and is it a solid?

- Draw a 90° arc
- Draw a circle with the larger Ø on the desired arc endpoint
- 3D rotate the circle 90°
- Calculate the taper angle by length of the arc, small and large radius
- Extrude, option path, option taper angle

That's it... :-D

 OK. I feel just a touch stupid.  :-D I have always whipped through the extrusion process so quickly that I never noticed the taper option. geez. Thanks!  :-)

Now THAT is slick!!  Thanks Jurg, for that one.  Haven't had a call for a reducing ell yet, but I got this in my "toolbox" now.

Don't feel bad. If I'm not mistaken, I believe AutoCAD has only been able to do a tapered extrusion along a path since R2004. Before that, you could do a tapered extrusion, but only along a straight vector, not along a path, and it's possible you were sort of sub conscienciously remembering that limitation.

You see. That is what I originally thought. I hope that is right. haha. As often as I use that command, I really hope that is right. haha.
