Wipeouts and Text masks
« on: October 26, 2005, 01:23:17 PM »
We currently use textmasks to make our annotation clearer on map backgrounds. Someone in the office does not agree with this and considers the use of these "lazy drafting"

I was just wondering who else uses them and how/why.

Is there any reason why we shouldnt use them.

Is there any reasons why I should insist on that person using them (apart from the fact its in the CAD manual)

Many thanks for your input

T :-)

I'd say the fact that they leave all your linework intact is a pretty important reason.

Yep, even code wipeouts into custom routines that define, create and populate blocks on the fly.

Notice the opaque appearance of the block once it's placed:

Added: I guess the subtitle to this is -- we use various AutoCAD technologies and techniques to maximize the readability and presentation of data in our drawings. I can't think of a good reason to recommend an alternative philosophy.

It's simple Tracey.
Tell him he can answer all client querys related to indecipherable annotation .. in his own time. That may change his mind.

If it is in the manual then take him to task. The manual wasn't written to be ignored.

I will do, but I wanted to make sure that I was doing right first. If my idea is complete clap-trap in the eyes of everyone here I would have to re-evaluated the use of them.

"clap trap"?

Adjusting scorecard.

Definition
claptrap   Show phonetics
noun INFORMAL DISAPPROVING
foolish, meaningless talk which should not be believed:
Don't believe a word of what he says. It's just a load of claptrap.

(from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

 :-D

Do you still need to adjust the scorecard :-)

The expression pretentious nonsense sounds a little more 'pure English' , but nowhere near as colourfull.

He never said he adjusted it down, just that he adjusted it.

Here, historically, lines were broken where text, section cuts, etc. would be on a line.  More recently, wipeouts and text masks began being used.  There are still a few here who, at least part of the time, break lines.  Makes me want to beat them.

Same here.

We use 'em for elevation and section marks.  Once demonstrated, the guys loved them and never looked back.
A simple improvement that really elevated my status here.

I have a question about wipeouts.

We don't use them, but I'd like to, so.... Is it possible to place a wipeout so that if the frames were left on the frame wouldn't plot, but the wipeout would still function fine?

Perhaps put them on the defpoints layer or a layer that plotting is disabled?
