For my own..

I have resolved many problem by making these steps..

Recovering drawing, purge ALL...I mean layer filter, empty blocks, empty text, page setups and all you can purge...do-it !
and make DXF in 2000 format.

than..

Open a new drawing with the acad.dwt and insert the DXF via DXFIN...

resave in DWG 2000 and reopen-it in 2005 or higher..

if these steps do not work..
you can use microstation to re-save the dwg or try downloading the INTELLIPLUS software...(AutoCAD clone)
and resave the drawing.
Keep smile...

Not drawing problems per se, but more of an AutoCAD/Windows problem:
Background;

We are 4 users all on acad 2004
Me; running on windows 2000 pro
3 others on windows XP pro
We have a cad department server (win 2000 pro, server edition) that is part of the company network
Prior to August 10th (hmmm, right when I got back from vacation....)
our ITwit had installed a new McAfee update to Virusscan professional:

version 9.1
build 9.1.10
dat version 4.0.4608
dat file created 10/19/2005

on the 3 other stations, and gave me the disk to install on my own machine.

At that time, we had ALL done windows update for service packs, critical updates, etc,
AND updated acad 2004 to service pack 1a.

Ever since, we've been getting seemingly random crashes.  Autocad will freeze up in the middle of just about any command, and ctrl-alt-delete / task manager / applications / says:
"autocad not responding."  The only thing we can do is end task, reboot acad, and redo any lost work.  We've been in the habit of saving every 1 or 2 minutes, to minimize lost time while I frantically search for a solution.

I thought it was a McAfee problem related to using up to much memory. I went to the McAfee forums, and found that for some screwy reason, it was set to check for updates every 5 minutes... 24/7/365 (WTH?!)  any attempt to reset this was wiped out each morning when we rebooted our computers.  The only solution I could find was to disable the task scheduler service in windows. So now we do manual updates daily to keep our dat files current. I thought that McAfee was somehow causing acad to crash.  I disabled (not uninstalled) McAfee and tried a demo of AVG.  No luck. I still get lockups... sometimes once a week, sometimes 5-6 times a day.

I'm not sure where to go with this.  Perhaps something wrong with acad service pack, so I did a clean install (SP 0) and still get these lockups.

The XP users are getting this in their event viewer:

Code: [Select]
Event Type: Error

Of course, the help and support center is, well...no help.

I, of course (w2k), get nothing in the event viewer, but acad puts acadstk.dmp in my drawing file directory which looks like this:

ok. fine. These dont mean a whole lot to me, so any of you aces that can help point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
This has gotta be a windows issue, I think.... but I also wonder if the ITwit is running some kinda "snoop" on all of us in the background so he can see if we're playing internet games when we're supposed to be working.  Frankly, I don't give him THAT much credit.  Not the most tech savvy.  Previous said:

I would assume :-o that it is a Mcaffee problem.  I tried the trial version and hated it!  The virus scanner reminds of spyware and adware, a pain to get rid of!

And snooping wouldn't be a problem, I would think, because my ITwit just did that last week to see who was eating up bandwidth.  And I didn't hear of any complaints other than the server being slowed down a bit.

I'm not very savvy either with comps.  Good luck!

Thanks. That helps some.  My theory is that at (seemingly random) times the resources get totally pegged, and being that acad is "normal" priority, it gets the axe.  As I said, I did disable McAfee, and ran with AVG for a few weeks, but there were still McAfee executables listed in the processes tab of the task manager.  I was trying to avoid a complete uninstall of McAfee.  Our ITwit would absolutely LOVE it if I had to go to him and ask for the install disk again.

  <We don't get along real well>

This has happened with acad the only app running.

Anyone know if I can reset Acad to a HIGH priority (and make it stick)?  I did not do this cause I was in the middle of a crisis job and didn't  want to "adversely affect" the program.  I think this would not be necessary anyway.

I'm not sure if there is a work around.

IMHO, I think you need to just bite the bullet and completely uninstall McAfee.  From the registry and etc.  If you don't, then you might as well scrap the whole machine!  McAfee cannot be completely disabled.  The virus scanner is still trying to update itself.  And that won't stop.

I'm a download addict at home, and Mcafee curbed my ventures for a long time till I finally bit the bullet.  There is help available that will instruct you on how to properly dispose of Mcafee completely!

Do some goggling on Mcafee's problems.  Please check out the link below..

I have been having a problem with my 2k5 ACad..sometimes when I have multiple drawings open AutoCad with simply switch itself off and return me to my desktop...no error messages or nothing..it usually saves itself in my temp file when this happens so I usually don`t lose much but it is happening on a more frequent basis..I have plenty of ram and installation of high end video card made no difference..tech dept installed new computer for new hire and he is also having similar problems..anyone else have this happen? and was there a cure for it?  thanks for the help!

forgot to add I am using  winXP sometimes autocad doesn't play well with other apps.

Redcow, how big are your drawings you have open, and what are you doing when you get booted from AutoCAD?
Thanks for explaining the word "many" to me, it means a lot.

Redcow, I don't use Vanilla Acad enough to know if it behaves like the add-ons.  But check out my problems with the add-ons (LDDT/Map).

Konessy and CTMill  thanks for the response..found that someone had tried to replace the graphics card driver in my machine with a different driver..actually had to drivers trying to load at the same time on some large drawing they opened fine other drawings  simply crashed without notice..I replaced graphics card with new Nvidia GT card removed all the old stuff on the machine it really does a good job now..
