OS: XP
CAD: AutoCAD 2006

When I "refedit" as you may well know, the drawing I edited gets saved as the current AutoCAD release version. I'm working on something that will create a list of all xrefs edited and save them with ObjectDBX in the background as R2000 (for the client!).  Anyone familiar with this type of operation?

A workaround would be to use etransmit when you send the drawings to the client.  You can specify which version you want the drawings saved as there.

True, but I like doing things the hard way...
...and I'm trying to stretch my programming muscles, and we are running 3 different versions of AutoCAD (04, 05, 06), so when 06 saves a refedit, 05 can't open it. I know its all messed up but hey, I'm jumping in here after 5 months of bad cad management.

I was under the impression that 2004-2006 were all the same filetype?

One cannot open a 2006 dwg with a 2004 version of AutoCAD.

Hi

Sorry, I have to totally disagree...

As "ronjonp" stated AutoCAD 2004, 2005 and 2006 all share the same file format.

AutoCAD 2006 did not! bring a new DWG format to the table.

Have a good one, Mike

I'm not talking about a new format, I'm talking about an incompatable version dwg file. Try it. Save a file in the newest version of AutoCAD that you have and then try opening it with a lower version. AutoDesk has never kept backward compatability.

Hi

Just so I do this right, you want me...

Create a new DWG file in AutoCAD 2006. Save (using default file format).
Open above DWG file in AutoCAD 2005 or 2004.

What should I be looking for, as I don't understand "incompatible version dwg file" in the context you are using it.

Below is taken directly from an AutoCAD 2006 review -

Quote
File Format: We're happy to announce that the drawing file format did not change with this release.  The default file format is 2004 format and it has the ability to save back to a 2000 format file.  If history repeats itself, this will be the last release on the 2004 format.  After all there was 2000, 2000i, then 2002 on the 2000 format.  This time around its 2004, 2005, then 2006.  Our forecast (based purely on recently history) is that the next release will be called 2007, it will be released in March 2006, and will bring a change in the API and drawing file format.

Have a good one, Mike
