How to create a hand drawn/hand colored rendering
« on: April 14, 2018, 01:22:12 PM »
I've drawn an elevation of a shopping center and we plan to have it printed and mounted approx 6' x 2' So, I'd like to give it a more artistic look. I am using ACADLT, and apparently can't add on AutoCAD Impressions, if that is even available anymore.

I can get around in photoshop, and stumble around in illustrator, but I'd like to do as much in cad as I can.

Any tips, suggestions or links to share? Is Impressions worth upgrading my cad?

ok so far what I've done is to photoshop the sky photo that I put in w paint daub filter.

Then I ran entire finished pdf thru photoshop splatter filter.

It's ok...not the best.

If you have AutoCAD2017+ , then look into the visual style 'Sketchy'. You may have to alter the settings a bit.

I am using ACADLT.

LT does not offer any such ability: you will need to subscribe to the more expensive One AutoCAD with the ARCH Toolset to use Napkin Sketch. Is this a dire business need, or a one off "photoshop/illustrator is good enough" need?

There isn't really a "easy button" for making things look good and artistic.  You're best bet is still to use tools like Photoshop, Sketchup, etc. to quickly shade in 2D drawings.  Or, contract it out.

Wasn't there at one time an Autodesk Product call Impression? I think I used a few times ALONG time ago. I think all I had to do was import in the dwg and then assign what ever pencil styles to each layer.

I don't know if they still have it though.

It was retired in 2009/2010 I believe, turned into a perk for annual renewal members only before disappearing for new subscribers, it may be available to full AutoCAD (not LT) maintenance subscribers if they've paid annual dues for a few years now.

That is incredible... From what I read... it was all in AutoCAD 2013. Pretty Cool.

or.... print a hard copy, grab some watercolor markers, and have at it.

This is one area I just don't think Revit will be able to successfully accomplish. There are just no replacements for a hand-drawn, semi-rough outline or sketch. Suggestion would be to hire designer who can also draw, or sub-contract it out.

Thanks everyone for your replies. The deadline reared its ugly head, so I just added some trees and shaded the asphalt parking in front. It will be printed on a cloth banner. def a one off kind of thing.

I can draw and paint, but getting everyone on board with what we wanted early enough to have time to do that would have been impossible!

I'll look into upgrading to full acad in the future - the napkin sketch looks really cool.
