Help,

I,ve been working Acad for 11 years. Currently working with R14.

I recently transfered Acad drawing files from 3-1/2" disc to CD's.

problem now is when I copied some of those same drawing files
back to Autocad directory........I can open them only as "Read Only"
files and cannot work on them now!!

I am not that familiar with all the mechanics of copying and transferring
files to and from CD's.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

A CD is typically not read-write, it's fixed data that can only be read. So when you copy it to your local drive it still contains the read only attribute. Simply right click on the file and change it to read write. (un-check the "read-only" box)

Micro$oft finally figured out with XP that when a person copies files from a CD to their computer that they, most likely, want them to be read/write. So, if you're using XP, this shouldn't be a problem.

Other than that, what Mark says is true.

The only other thing to check: For some reason, with some versions of R14 (yes, there are different versions) AutoCAD sees every file in a folder that has a 'dot' ( . ) in it as 'read-only'.

In other words, if you put the drawings in a folder named

C: \2003.drawings

AutoCAD R14 will assume that they are 'read-only'. Get rid of the 'dot' and all will be well.

Yeah... try to find that on Autodesk's website. I bet you can't.

I spent nearly an entire day trying to figure out what was going on with a set of drawings we'd received at my last job. On a whim I decided to take out the 'dot' on the directory name and, suddenly, all was well with the world.
