CAD drawings in Word documents
« on: November 17, 2015, 04:25:19 PM »
Is there a way to insert CAD drawings into a word document, lets say as a .wmf file. Create a link between the two, so if the CAD drawing changes it will automatically update the word document? The inserted drawing does not have to be a .wmf file, I have heard that is the best file format for inserting CAD files into Word. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

What I do is plot preview in ACAD , use the Windows Snipper to copy to clip board.
The just paste to Word as if it were text & the image is sized to fit.
Windows 10 & MS Word 2007

You can snip from a PDF too & just past to Word.

There's also BetterWMF.  I've not needed it in years, but IIRC it worked quite well.

That would be cool but I don't think it can be done.

I've never used it, but Word 2013 has "Insert" "Object" and for "Create New" includes "AutoCAD Drawing" as a choice. I can't remember which version of Word started this, but I know it's been there for a while now.
It has option to insert from file, so if you can create drawing from new, it should insert drawing from file.
Whether or not it updates (like an xref or not), I do not know.

Wow, cool. I can not get the object in the Word document to update though. You can even drag-n-drop a .dwg into Word.

I did a quick play with it.
It seems the drawing exists within the word doc.
If you dbl click, it opens in acad. Edit it, save it and that is what you see in the word doc.
If you edit the original dwg, it has no effect on the doc dwg.

I've always printed to PNG format and inserted the image file.
