If I can influence you at all, learn C# when it comes to .NET.  VB is great and reads like English so it is probably easier to learn but you'll struggle to learn anything beyond it.  C# will let you easily migrate to Java and Javascript.  Then its just a stones throw to C++.

Just to add to the mix here ... the hardest language you will EVER learn is the one you learn FIRST. It is irrelevant what flavor you happen to choose, you will struggle with it and have lots of questions ... and then you will throw your hands up and say that there is no way anyone could possibly learn this stuff ... then at some point, if you really work at it and devote the time and energy to learn it, you will have that AHA moment when it all suddenly makes sense.

From that point on, what you will find is that the language is irrelevant, the only thing that matters will be the particular "grammar" you will need to adhere to ... that is except for Javascript ... its the devil ... well, not really, but every browser and version of browser seems to interpret it differently.
