See example attached with Layers in random order.

Hello mjfarrell,

That was the first thing I tried, but no joy. It is set to 1000. when I change to 10000 - no change.

MAXSORT does not alphabetize my layers in the hatch dialog.

then the help file is wrong and
the MAXSORT function is broken - as stated that IS what it is supposed to control

OR

If the total number of items, also called named objects, exceeds this value, no items are sorted.

I have looked in to this, but my drawing is a blank template with default layers and blocks with in it, therefore should not be a problem. Just frustrating when hatching and want to select a layer. BTW I am using AutoCAD 2014.

All the best, Robbo.

one could always set the desired layer current FIRST...and not do it in the layer dialog...and then send a hate mail to autodesk

so glad I don't work for autodesk.....

on the other hand....they should hire me to help kick the programmers's collective behinds into fixing all these little annoying
f'ups that just don't work as they should.

The users would most likely love me,
while the programmers would plot my demise...

The stock holders would also love me...as a better product would build more loyal customers...

Further research shows....FINALLY  FIXED

IF  you are using R2015

Quote
Layer sort
Layer lists are now displayed using natural ordered sort. For example, the layer names 1, 4, 25, 6, 21, 2, 10 are sorted as 1,
2, 4, 6, 10, 21, 25 instead of 1, 10, 2, 25, 21, 4, 6. Natural ordered sort applies to all layer lists including the Hatch Editor
Ribbon tab and Quick Select just to name a few. You can restore the ASCII sort used in previous releases by changing the
new SORTORDER system variable to 0.

Answer from Autodesk Enterprise Priority Support:

"Thank you for creating a case with Autodesk Enterprise Priority Support.

It appears that you are using the classic version of the hatch command (eg HPDLGMODE=1). This dialog box behaves differently from the ribbon version of the command, in that it does not regard the layer settings for your drawing.  In the ribbon version of the command, it will show layer settings from the layer dialog box.  For example, if you have a filter active, the ribbon will show you the layers included in the filter.  The classic Hatch dialog ignores these filters and "does its own thing" with regard to sorting.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions. "
