Converting a point cloud into dwg or revit
« on: January 09, 2015, 09:51:23 AM »
I need some help/advice please.

Does anyone know how to convert point clouds into a workable CAD and/or Revit file please.  What software would I need, are there any good tutorials etc.

Many thanks

It doesn't *quite* work that way.  A point cloud is 3D, and trying to fit a surface over the points that works can be difficult.  The more complex the point cloud, the more difficult the surface.  You can try some of the Recap applications for this, along with Project Memento in the Labs (I think - not certain if its still active).  If this is a civil scan ie. mostly grade, you might get away with Civil3D.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.

try {GreatPower;}
   catch (notResponsible)
      {NextTime(PlanAhead);}
   finally
      {MasterBasics;}

Memento is still active (just saw something on LinkedIn about it yesterday) but it looks like it's geared more towards making reality capture smooth and visible on a mobile device platform.

I assumed it wouldnt be as simple as that, but my start point will be a point cloud, and my end point will be a 3D model output file to send to clients. (sometimes a building - so a revit model, and sometimes a road, so a c3D model).

Any advice / guidance as to where to look for good tutorials, or procedures or anything really!

I have ReCap on my machine, but have never had need to open it... and I think someone told me that Bentley Descartes works with point clouds too.

Thanks Krush.
I am waiting for a sample point cloud to be dumped on my area of the server. I have ReCap installed... expect inane questions flying your way :)
