Strange Error on AutoCAD installation
« on: December 01, 2014, 11:27:03 AM »
I needed to gain access to some of my old drawings over the weekend so I dug out my A2k7 CDs and went to install it on my Win7 computer. Everything was going fine until it gave an error that a file could not be found on the CD. I looked and sure enough the file isn't there.

Considering this is an OEM CD set that I received from AutoDesk, I know the files should be there. In fact, I know the software installed previously without issue.

A search of the CD found the files, but I can't move them to the location where it is looking for them and there is no way to browse to the file location.

What gives? Any ideas?

Do you not have a newer version of AutoCAD?

No. Because I am no longer in the design/drafting field, I can't justify buying a newer version.

I tried installing A2k but it wouldn't even install.

That is the extent of AutoCAD versions available to me.

How about using a trial version?

Tried that ... there were hundreds of files it said it couldn't find. I guess I could have moved them to the location where it thought they should exist (after copying the CDs), but after half a dozen files, I gave up. I told it to ignore the error and there were several hundred files that it couldn't find. It would have taken forever to get it installed like that.

:?

That could be an issue with copying it, but it didn't seem to have any effect.

It is just baffeling that it is a factory CD that I received from Autodesk and it installed previously without issue, although that was WinXP w/SP3 and the new install is Win7 Pro 64bit w/SP1.

perhaps try 'create a deployment'  I think  I've done that to get around similar issues in the past

Isn't one of the things DRM can do is to limit the number of available installs?

That isn't an issue with AutoCAD, and it isn't an issue with non-modifyable media. I guess if Autodesk tracked every installation it could be true, but I have only installed it once before, and my license allows two concurrent installations.

It could be an issue with something in a Windows 7 update ... We had the same problems installing 2004 LT on our newest Windows 7 machines but had no problems installing on the XP boxes  or our original Windows 7 installations.  I had to search ones with a working install for the required file and copy it into the correct location in the network installation folder.  The CD install rejected all efforts.

Do you have an XP machine to test out on ( or setup VM )? Maybe your media did go bad.

These files may have been supplied with XP rather than the AutoCAD install disc (are these specifically AutoCAD files, or Win files?), but rolled into the core of Win 7 so are no longer applicable as stand-alone files.  They simply wouldn't exist in the Win 7 context.

What about one of the low-cost/free AutoCAD clones instead?

I installed it on XP Pro SP3 without issue so it must be a Win7 issue
