Can anyone tell me why I cant open this dwg in 2009?
« on: September 02, 2014, 01:32:22 PM »
Hello,

It was produced with 2014 lt, It will open in 2014, its saved as 2004 I think, but I cant open it.
Autocad freezes when opening.  It doesn't appear to have a large scale list, I'm not sure what else to look for.
Any idea what could be preventing it and how to fix it?

Thanks

SAVE AS is not the proper way to save a drawing to a previous version. While it does work with some files, it really should be done using EXPORTTOAUTOCAD.

It's definitely a 2004 DWG.  I haven't tried opening it yet (I only have 2015 MEP).

I ran the AECTOACAD command on your drawing and saved down to 2004.  Try this version.

On a side note, I don't think vanilla AutoCAD recognizes AECTOACAD but I may be wrong.

thanks for the replies.
Ive tried exporttoautocad and the aectoacad version but it still freezes.
looks like it gets to 24% then the freeze happens.
Weird.

How about trying Drawing True View, which is free from AutoDesk, to convert it?

Ive tried that, but thanks for the idea, I also have any dwg dxf converter, it converts it fine, but I cant open it.  I think my next step is to open in 2014 and copy clip everything into a fresh drawing.

Do you have any proxy objects in the 2014 version? If so, you will need to get the object enabler.

Not that I know of.  Copyclip into a fresh drawing doesn't even work..

Try this one.  I removed the PDF that wasn't found.  Just curious if maybe that's the reason it's hanging up for you.

Not that I know of.

It's easy enough to figure out. Select all and check the list in the properties box drop down.

The file in your first post has already been saved down to an earlier version, correct?

If so, open the file in 2014 and save as version 2013. Close it, re-open it, and start your conversion from there.

If the file has already been saved down, your conversion still won't work.

OK, ill give that a go.
No proxies, there was an ole from xls which I have removed.
Bloody el, that's done it, removing the ole object has done the trick, cant believe it...
Thanks for your helpful advise, if I hadn't gone into the properties I wouldn't have noticed the ole object.  :-) :-) :-)
Cheers

SAVE AS and AECTOACAD are two different commands.  Save As does just that.... saves the current drawing as a different version.  AECTOACAD strips all of the AEC info from the drawing and converts it to basic AutoCAD entities.

I noticed the OLE object but didn't give it much thought since it wasn't linked to an external file and you could see it whereas with the PDF you couldn't see it.  stupid OLE objects...   *shakes fist at the OLE gods*

I agree but if the file has already been "Saved As" a previous version, exporting it won't work. It needs to be done with an AutoCAD that recognizes the new features that may be contained in the originating file format, whether or not they were used. This is something that really bugs me about even being able to "save as" previous versions. Exporting using the two commands mentioned (or MEP has an option to export using the application menu) should be the only available ways to "save back" to previous formats.

I avoid them like the plague. Too many wierd issues pop up at the most inopportune times.
