Have you tried opening the bloated file and doing a Saveas as a new file name?

I remember something like this happening in the past when I used to CAD with AutoCAD but that was many many versions ago.

The AECTOACAD command will scrub the drawing clean of any AEC info (and 3D info) making it a strictly 2D drawing.

I have tried to resave the file and also the command AECTOACAD but still the same results. There must be ghosts in these files.

You don't need anything but to wblock the drawings out using the * option when prompted for <define new drawing>.

If this hasn't been resolved already...

Did the files originate from MicroStation somewhere along the line? We have seen files bloat to 8-10MB with very little in the file and running this fix helped whittle them down to 1MB:

Two things I do in that situation.. first Purge RegApps
_-purge
R
etc........

2nd

If I have access to autocad 2014 I open with that, and then use
_-exporttoautocad
set the format to 2010
Bind set to "not bind"
Suffex to "2010"
then ent ent ent to save.

it will then save yourfile.dwg to the file yourfile2010.dwg  and it will include the layout as well as model space.

this has the effect of removing any types of items like ARX objects that can cause files to bloat...

If you can give that a shot. and report back that would be awesome.
I am very  trainable....   (forgive my spelling)
