File size increases for no apparent reason
« on: April 09, 2014, 03:01:22 PM »
Hello everybody, I have here a small dilemma. I have many files from our subs that range in size from 1200kb to 1500kb. As i save these files into our network, for no apparent reason they increase to around 8500kb. I am not drawing anything nor adding anything to these drawings.....just resaving them....Any ideas??
thanks...Nardino

Is it getting saved to a newer version or saved with a vertical?

yes, I did received them as a zipped file and the size of each one unzipped was as I mentioned around 1200kb.

are you opening the drawings after unzipping, and then saving them?

If you are running a vertical, AA , C3D, etc, they will add to the file size automatically with AEC data.

I am not doing anything to these files........basically unzip them and resave them in our network. They were created in AutoCad 2013 and resaved in with the same version

Can you purge anything out of them?
How about sharing one of the files before it gets bloated?

Everything is purged.
I am enclosing 3 drawings here in a zipped file. One is a duplicate after i resaved it and the filesize increased, and the other is nothing more than a titleblock. The file to compare is: NHMCT111-500-A4-P0410-00T.dwg and zzzNHMCT111-500-A4-P0410-00T.dwg.
thanks

Very brief examination of the patient reveals the dwg needs JennyCraig.lsp because it's morbidly bloated with zombies and regapp entries likely introduced by an audit. Sorry, way too busy to provide more info.

I'm curious why are you opening them to re-save them at all?

I mean if someone send me a zip file full of files I don't open those files to save them where they belong on the network.

While that still wont get rid of the junk in the files as mentioned above, in theory it also wont create it either.

Many companies quarentine and clean externally supplied drawings before making them available for internal use. The implementation I use may differ from the OP's but the principle is sound IMO.

Have you tried opening the bloated file and doing a Saveas as a new file name?

I remember something like this happening in the past when I used to CAD with AutoCAD but that was many many versions ago.

The AECTOACAD command will scrub the drawing clean of any AEC info (and 3D info) making it a strictly 2D drawing.

I have tried to resave the file and also the command AECTOACAD but still the same results. There must be ghosts in these files.

You don't need anything but to wblock the drawings out using the * option when prompted for <define new drawing>.

If this hasn't been resolved already...

Did the files originate from MicroStation somewhere along the line? We have seen files bloat to 8-10MB with very little in the file and running this fix helped whittle them down to 1MB:

Two things I do in that situation.. first Purge RegApps
_-purge
R
etc........

2nd

If I have access to autocad 2014 I open with that, and then use
_-exporttoautocad
set the format to 2010
Bind set to "not bind"
Suffex to "2010"
then ent ent ent to save.

it will then save yourfile.dwg to the file yourfile2010.dwg  and it will include the layout as well as model space.

this has the effect of removing any types of items like ARX objects that can cause files to bloat...

If you can give that a shot. and report back that would be awesome.
