Is 35,000KB too big
« on: August 14, 2013, 10:39:57 AM »
The reason I ask is 35,000KB too big of a file because I work in Autocad 2013 3D and alot of the drawings I have are around 35,000KB and when its around there my computer goes into a slow mode example to save that drawing could take up to 30 minutes and sometimes it crashes. The system I am using is Windows 7 pro with a processor AMD phenom II x 4 965 processor 3.40 GHz, RAM 6.00 GB on a 64 bit operating system. Maybe the system is too slow any ideas?

Thanks,
Brent

What location are you saving this file to? If it's a network location, try copying the file over locally and see if you still have the save issues.

Originally the file was on the our network and that's when it crashed. So I now work on my local hard drive and it is better. I just not sure if that size is a normal size hence the question?
Thanks

Purge?

Layer Filters?

Xdata?

These are the usual suspects, but if you're dealing with a lot of complex geometry then that could be where the bloat lies. Without more info, it's almost impossible to pinpoint.

Welcome to the Swamp, btw.

It does sound big but I have no idea what is in it to give you a definitive answer. Try purging and auditing to see if it gets any smaller.

Reducing file size is always better when it is a practical option.

35mb is on the limit of what I like to do, but I've not had too much problems with it.  I try to separate the model out in multiple xrefs when it starts getting that big.  Nowadays are SOP for model organization, by nature, keeps file sizes down a bit.  This project I'm on now has a lot of xrefs around 5mb each and that's about it.  Lot of xrefs though.

My biggest problem with files and bloat is registered applications. I have this in my startup to clean files as they come in the door :)

(command "._-purge" "_regapps" "*" "_n")

We used to do a lot of 3D solids in AutoCAD and 35MB is very large.  Now we're using MEP and 35MB is the norm.  Have you tried WBLOCKing the drawing.  That will help alot with vanilla AutoCAD objects.

REGAPPs don't occupy much space.  Purging them just removes a string (the name) from a list.

Along with the XREFs, keep in mind a few other points:

Level of detail:  If you are using objects to generate drawings then keep in mind how big they will be at the desired drawing scale.  A bolt head on a 1:100 drawing will be a very small blob, which is a waste of effort and file size.

Block inserts: the more inserts you use, the more efficient they are.  The first block will cost you file size, but subsequent inserts will be far less.  Find features that you can duplicate and create blocks for them.  For example, a crane boom is literally built by bolting together repeated 6-meter lengths.  Instead of individually modeling each segment, create one as a block and insert as many segments as needed.

Curves: Curves are expensive.  Never use a double curved survace (sphere or torus) when a single curved surface (cylinder or curved rectangular section) will do.  Never use a single curved surface when a flat section will do.  Implement with both level of detail and block inserts notes above.

Freeze layers: layers that are turned off regenerate.  Layers that are frozen do not.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.

try {GreatPower;}
   catch (notResponsible)
      {NextTime(PlanAhead);}
   finally
      {MasterBasics;}

I'd have to disagree. This depends on how many there are. I've seen upwards of 100,000 in a drawing that bloat the file size tremendously.
