Coordinates along a spline.
« on: June 14, 2013, 01:40:41 PM »
Hello, fellow CADesters.
I'm a young CADist in the roads sector and i'm working doing as build and gathering coordinates for the Topographers. On thing that is hurting my productivity is gather coordinates of various points of the road Axis or Roadside. I was wondering if there is a easy way to get a list of coordinates of a spline (or multiple ones) at a given distance, in my case, I need to gather coordinates from multiple splines along the roadside at each 10 meters, doing it manually is pretty ineffective.

You could use the measure command to place points on the spline at a given distance, and then use Lee Mac's Point Manager http://lee-mac.com/ptmanager.html to export the coordinates to a text file.

Off topic curiousity question:
Why splines? I would think it would be very hard to generate accurate drawings with them.

Well, roads are not square so we use splines for a soft and smooth curve, and the topographers... well they know how to make it accurate (even not begin all that accurate), also, we use arcs for those central gardens.

Yes, the measure command will place AutoCAD point objects

Hmm... Actually, I was searching a little bit and found this http://docs.autodesk.com/ACD/2010/ENU/AutoCAD%202010%20User%20Documentation/index.html?url=WS1a9193826455f5ffa23ce210c4a30acaf-4a17.htm,topicNumber=d0e266559

Looks like I was using it wrong. Seems exacly what I need, gonna try it monday mourning at work and train a little bit at home this sun day. Thanks for the help   :-)

Edit:
Also, i think that the main problem was my AutoCAD version, it's AutoCAD 2007, I gonna ask my boss for an upgrade next week.

Tryed it now with my 2007 at home and it worked, seems that I really wasn't familiar with this command.

Since it's close enough to be relevant: be sure to look at the DIVIDE command.
