Is it really need to study BIM for Civil Engineering?
« on: April 15, 2013, 03:51:23 AM »
Hi, theswamp members,

I am a Formwork scaffolding engineers in Korea.
I have used Autocad 2011 to do my jobs.

By the way, I have a lot of questions since 2008 about BIM for Civil engineering.

Is it really need to study BIM for Civil engineering?

I moved your topic here because I think it will get more exposure and I like the question. :)

Hi Nokiya,

I used to design formwork and falsework (scaffolding) for Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company.

A lot of the scaffolding components we used were modular pieces which are ideally suited to BIM type layouts.

I once studied BIM but I never really learned it so I need some help here.

But I have designed a lot of concrete forms and supports so I know this part.  How to put new technology like BIM towards the design of concrete formwork I think is the question.

Yes, learn BIM.

Others on this site will help you too.

Hi Mark.

I am appreciated that you moved my topic. :-)

Hi Bob Garner,

It is my big pleasure that i read your reply.
Yes, I'd like to learn BIM to do work more effectively.
A few months ago, i asked on this website that how to takeoff the quantity of a lot of scaffolding components like "wale", "timber" and "spindle".
After then, I've got an answer from this website like that "ASD will work out for your job."
But there was an other questions as below when i tried "ASD" and to do test.

1. how can i customize "ASD" with our company's scaffolding components?

2. how to extract the quantities of  the components and convert to excel.

I tried to do myself with tutorials but it was really difficult to do. :-(

By the way, what kind of program do you usually use to do designed the form and support?

In my case, i only used to autocad 2011 and EXcel to do takeoff the quantity of "wale" or "Timber" or "Plywood".

Thanks.

As to the question of BIM and Civil, simply understand that BIM is a process not a product.
The process of using an intelligent model to design, analyze, and later manage a project.

As to customizing ASD to your work, that would be a continuing discussion or work to be conducted closely with
a trusted consultant.
To get your spead sheets, that is a by product of creating your layouts from within ASD properly.
They are a by-product of the process.
You must first create the model,
then you must assign station/index numbering, then create your drawing sets from those stations.
During that process there is an option to create the XLS files.
Be your Best

Mr. Mark,

Shouldn't this be more appropriate in the engineering area?

BIM is a vast and interesting topic.

Ron

Hi Ron. That might very well be the place for this topic, and I thought about putting it there too. I liked the question so much I moved here to get maximum exposure. The engineering forum can not be seen by none members but this one can.

Hi Mark, Thanks for your response.  Let's go for exposure so we can gather more inputs.

Is it really need to study BIM for Civil engineering?

Yes, I believe it is a must not only for CE but to all AEC.
It replaces the traditional process of coordination since everyone collaborates integratedly.

Ron

Bingo. I like the way you defined that, and I agree completely.

I don't know if BIM is a "must" for mid-size, common/simple concrete work.    The process of what goes on in the field can be quite different from what is envisioned in the engineering office although the end product is the same.  The senior workers out in the field will take the overall drawings, toss the detailed stuff, and tell their workers "And now this is how we're REALLY going to do this."  So its important to understand just how detailed the information should be.  It can be more detailed than more conventional planning but without knowledgeable input from the field it can just as easily end up wasting time and money.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.

try {GreatPower;}
   catch (notResponsible)
      {NextTime(PlanAhead);}
   finally
      {MasterBasics;}

Thanks for input dgorsman.

Let's think of it as a tool.
The more tool we have, the better equipped we are.

For simple works, it may not require specialized tool.  Then conventional way works alot easier.

Larger projects would benefit more.  Communication, quality, data management would be greatly improved if BIM is implemented practically.
It is the client's call how much detail the  process he wants depending on his use of the end product of BIM.

Ron

Hi Mjfarell,
Thanks for your response.
I tried to test as follow your advice with ASD.
It worked out well and i could extract the attributes of components.
By the way, I would like to give an other question with ASD.
There are lots of materials to study ASD like help file on Autodesk.com.
It has many explanations about a basic functions of commands and GUI.
But it is difficult to take a look whole things on autodesk website.
Is there  tutorials or websites which can do step by step?

Thanks.
