New Windows 8 Laptop
« on: November 27, 2012, 02:54:19 pm »
Does anyone know where to get a decent new Windows 8 laptop?

I thought these configurations these compaines built or order a huge number of were a little cheaper, but cannot find a configuration that I like.

Seems every one with I7 processor and 6 to 8 gigs comes with at least a 2TB hard drive.

I have DirectTV with porno channels and do not need all the space.

I7 processor, 8gig, 250-500GB harddrive would be great.

Our first new laptop just arrived today:

Dell Precision  M6700, i7 2.6 Ghz, 32 GB RAM, 2 GB VC, 750 GB SSD... IT does the setup before we finally get it for production. If it comes with Windows 8 (that is an available option), then our IT wipes it to install Windows 7 Enterprise (our current corporate standard).

** I still use the ragged, old M6600 from last year, that only has 16 GB RAM, and non-SSD.

Put together the laptop's specs myself, and got management to approve it a couple weeks ago... The new dual 24" ws monitors won't be ordered until January  :|, but the new "standard CAD station" should work out nicely, methinks.

We have a substantial IT group, that can often seem like they're in the way... But for the most part, at least in my region, we have a really solid group that has never failed us generally, or kept us waiting more than necessary.

Included in the base price for the laptop (aka standard)... Big corporate discount with Dell... International design firm with +5,000 CAD users (out of +11,000 staff, and growing with each new acquisition).

Unfortunately I don't have enough time to express how much I detest Win8 in this post, but simply watch any Win8 review on YouTube, or go to your local PC store and try using a demo machine with Win8 installed and you'll very soon understand my reasons...

Have messed a little and completely understand, but some people I know who still wanted to keep XP and moved to windows 8 absolutely hated it, but after a couple of weeks they have said they are now glad and have taken a real liking to it, especially ones who also have Win 8 phone how easily calender, e-mail, etc.... tie together.
