For some of you who frequent CADTutor, this will be a duplicate post. I thought I'd post a project I'm working on. I started this last night and it's about midnight tonight and came to a good stopping point. So far I've got about 6 hours into this.
This is me recreating a guitar that I own. On my 15th birthday my father bought me a brand new Fender Squier Stratocaster. It set my pops back about $480 IIRC. Here are some photos of my guitar, back in the day:
I was 16 in this pic, so 14 years ago jamming it as of this year (2012).
A good friend of mine jamming my guitar, probably 9-10 years ago (best pic I got of it that long ago).
And on to the renders. So far I'm more than satisfied with the results. Using AutoCAD v2012, which is your "industry standard" CAD program and usually seen as not the best to model objects like this. Usually 3D Studio MAX or equivalent is "best", but AutoCAD can still be mighty powerful.
1st render. So far, modeled the pick guard, single-coil pickups, volume/tone knobs, tone selector switch.
Reverse angle.
Modeled the bridge.
Added screws to bridge, added text on knobs.
Modeled the body, added the strap button, also added the cord connection (still need to model the female connector).
Overall view.
Reverse angle.
Same view as last, but added a plane underneath for added realism with the shadows underneath and overall color change, etc. This is all I got so far and I'm definitely like where it's headed.
Wireframe screenshot of same view.
And of course you have to Photoshop a wireframe/render combo shot!! haha, I like how this came out.
And here are some scanned images of my hand drawn dimensions, piece by piece. This shows how I'm coming up with such accuracy that accounts for the realism. I have a cheap digital vernier caliper that works wonders for things like this.
Another sheet.
Well, there you have it. Hope y'all enjoy it. I'm definitely enjoying it so far. I think what I'm going to do is surprise my pops by taking some cool angles, rendering them super realistic then doing some badass Photoshop'ing. I'll do this in a poster size, then get it framed and give it to my pops as a gift for him to hang in his office. He loves music, rock'n'roll, etc and never had the talents to play guitar like his idols (Hendrix, SRV, Joe Perry, etc) so when I picked up his guitar @ 14 yrs old he decided to live that dream through me. I think it'd be cool to give his gift to me back in a gift of my own, a badass poster of the very guitar he gave me that's been 100% modeled and rendered by me, taking all dimensions from the guitar itself.
Anyways, again.... thought I'd share.
