Wireless Network Error

(1/1)

DinØsaur:
Twice in the last week, I have fired up my home wireless network first thing in the morning, loaded  the internet and navigated about 15 minutes with no problems.  Then with no obvious provocation I lose internet capability followed by losing access to anything my home network.  Eventually a Windows error will pop up indicating that a second machine on the network has the same DNS number as my computer.  The only two computers in our house have both been in sleep mode all night and were having no conflicts the prior evening.  While this is happening I am able to wake the other computer and navigate without problems.  The only remedy so far has been to disable the wireless network on the affected computer and create a new network connection from scratch.  I know very little about networks, especially wireless, and have no clue as to the cause or how to prevent this from happening.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

perhaps use static IP address(es) for the PCs, as it appears the router DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol)
is serving up bad IP's on it's own.

Or learn to use IPCONFIG /release and /renew

You could also try setting up your router to assign fixed IP's based on the computer mac address. I've done this at my house for years with great success.

This is how I have it set up.  comps - 2-10, printers 40-50, Plotters 200-250.  You will have to set the router to use IP's above the assigned range (i.e. 10- ^)  so there is no conflict with smart phones (unless you assign them as well) and game consoles that get IP dynamically.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  The network with this router was just out of the box and seems similar to the router settings for the one it replaced that never gave this problem but I will try the fixes tonight.  It might take another week to see if this solves the issue but appears it can do nothing but help.  It is a most basic setup with only 2 computers and a wireless printer - no game systems or TV connections and all phones are the dumb variety.  I remember though that my wife accessed last night with her Kindel reader last night so that may have agitated the thing.
