Civil 3D & Google Earth Pro
« on: March 23, 2012, 12:03:41 pm »
Google Earth (GE) Pro was just installed recently, so I thought I'd check out some of the GE functionality - unfortunately though, every attempt to import image or surface results in a 'Class not registered' error.

No change from Civil 3D 2011, or 2012. I checked to make sure that my GE was up to date, and there is no update available. Even tried following the Help topic & tutorial to the letter (i.e., no view twist, rotation, etc.)... Same error.

... Any ideas?

What happens if you use regular unleaded Goggle Earth?

Come again, Gov'na?  :?

Sorry for my confusion here... What do you mean by 'unleaded'?

I only have Google Earth Pro installed; Non-Professional is not available on my machine AFAIK.

Are you unable to download and install regular GE?

Unfortunately yes, I am unable to download and install applications without IT assistance.

Perhaps I can test on my home computer.

Thanks

I have no problem with free google earth and Civil 3D 2010, except the images aren't always located correctly. I am sure it has something to do with coordinate conversion, but I don't know how to tell what the coordinate system is in google earth.

The question is what coordicante system is your C3D file using?

2011 and 2012
I use google earth all the time for surfaces. Once you set your coordinates to state plane and your units to feet, everything comes in nicely. I have found that if I bring in the surface and image separately, I have less problems with crashing.

Are you using standard or pro?

I've put in a request to get standard installed, as I only have pro at the moment, to test. Attempting to bring in image or surface (2011 and 2012) results in a 'class not registered' error.

No worries; just curious.

It appears that the systemic issue is when working with Pro, which is ironic.

So you use GE surfaces for active projects... in lieu of, or as a precursor to survey?

I've never worked with GE & CAD (obviously, given the errors), so I am curious to know how others use it in their work.

We've used it for proposal stuff.

Is in no way accurate enough to be used for design or even proposal work.  It may be helpful for some preliminary layout work but I would not trust the data generated from said surface.
