I didn't try -very- hard to get orbit or pan to work.
It's a macro-only device, unfortunately. Even the d-pad is like that. I chose to assign SW/W/NW/N/NE/E/SE/S iso and ortho views to the 8 points of the d-pad. That's been quite helpful by itself. I have shift+middle-mouse-button set to fire the 3dForbit command, so it's rather fluid there... so demand wasn't high to get orbit to work.
However, I think pan -would- work just fine. Unfortunately not how you'd think.
You'd have to set a macro like I did for the preset-views. You could take the 'north' button, and create a macro that would do a command-line version of 'pan' such as:
(^C-pan;0,0,0;0,25,0;^C)
That way every time you tap that sucker, it goes north (or in the Y direction) 25 units. The speed the macro fires can be refined a bit. If you'd like, I can test it and report the effects, around lunch time. I have to way to record video of my screen though, but I can try and be thorough in explanation.
