BIM, Revit and big project
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:24:33 AM »
The company I work implementing BIM technology, using Revit, Civil, Navisworks.
As a basis we take the standard "AEC UK BIM Standard for Revit v1.0"
But we've got a lot of questions on working with large projects...

The standard model offers a separate part of the files and merge different sections as references.
we have a problem with families who are in different categories such as:
A door belongs to the architects and they can edit it many times - the material, color and markings. But opening the door and belongs to designers who need to do at this time reinforcing the wall ...
2 Pump Water belongs to the engineers, the engine - electricians.
3 Such examples are many, how to organize the work?

ps. I very much want to talk on implementing BIM for large civil engineering projects.  :-)

Look into worksets. They will do what you are asking about.

We share access to unapproved data on the level of access to folders domain.

It looks like you've got it figured out. Separate models for Arch, MEP, and Structural and then use worksets for local users.

That's exactly what we do as well.

how do you organize to work together with common families?
For example, a door - Architects, a hole in the wall for the door - Structural...

Not quite sure what you are asking there but I'll take a stab at it.

The models are shared by linking the separate models into each other at the Central level. Kind of like XREFs in AutoCAD.

chillers belongs to the engineer on ventilation, but the motor power can be edited by electrical engineer.
If they have different models, how they can simultaneously edit the same family?
Also, access to editing, you need an engineer for automation, control systems for editing...

How do you solve this problem using a different project files for different disciplines?

A similar problem with the doors and windows. The design of doors, can change an architect, until the last day of editing the attributes of the door. But the hole in the wall should be at the constructors ...

If you work in one project file, and separate sets of working, then everything is clear!
If you work in different project files and use the link, the common family cause headaches.

Elements can be copied and monitored from the links. For example, we get architectural models with light fixures and link it into our MEP model. The MEP model can make a direct copy of the light fixture or replace it with another one. Ideally, you would use the same one.

The only "common family" we use are Annotations and Titleblocks. Each discipline owns their portion of the model which holds a bit of accountability, making our plans consistent across the board. When we use XREF's and AutoCAD, coordination between disciplines get lost very quickly - not anymore with Revit.

Just my $0.02 is all.

Thank you all! :)

I understand how you can organize your work. I am very interested in the solutions are already used.
