What is this, to encourage others to jump on the bandwagon?

A lot of people put a lot of effort into peer to peer support there (as at any forum).
It will be an incredible waste of effort if that resource is lost ... irrespective of anyone's personal feelings about the AUGI management/philosophy past or present.
... that's the real shame.

what a waste of a forum.
I'm looking things up on the internet and the searches (yahoo & google) are still pointing toward these old forums. This is really frustrating. I shall be avoiding it like the plague

Yea, I had about 6700 posts over there, 2nd or 3rd most on that particular forum, and I guess it's all history now.

Is it standard practice to rely on someone else to take the initiative to create a backup, or is this kinda typical?

I don't believe this is a backup issue, but rather Augi allowed another entity become owners of the digital data, who retains legal rights to this data. I could understand that issue, but I can't for the life of me understand the forums format change.

I did not catch that part.  I had thought it was a matter of the previous host having the only backup and not delivering it for some reason.  My main thought was that if AUGI had done their own backups periodically, they could have had a copy of their original data all this time, and reused it, regardless of some silly ownership claims.

The Augi / SolidVapor divorce was quite messy as I understand it. I think SV has used every advantage it has, including maintaining ownership and control of the data, as leverage over Augi in the meantime. Looking back, I guess Augi felt like they wanted to run with the new website at AU, instead of waiting to see if they could negotiate an agreement with SV.

None of that explains dropping vBulletin though.

(BTW: That is all my uninformed opinion - I don't claim to have any inside knowledge of anything, just from what I read or hear... Anyone with hard facts, feel free to correct me. Thanks)

The Swamp is great but focuses mostly on customization and tweaking.  AUGI provided a much more user-centric forum for solving day-to-day questions.  Collectively we just went from standing on a mountain to standing on a molehill.
