And another way to do so.... note in Mark's original screencap, it shows that the AreaLabelStyle is set to INSIDE. Right there in the Properties Palette you can change it to another style, except <none>, so having a "_No Display" style is handy. Note that this is in 2009, and it says "Default Area Label Style" which is not quite correct because it is really the Site's Area Label Style. In 2010, I'm pretty sure this has been corrected.

Jeff it was proably assigned the DEFAULT style through whatever the parcel label style that was set in the command/feature settings when the parcel was created.  If I recall should the user NOT override the 'default' settings it gets listed that way; same thing did or does happen with point labels as well.
And a NO DISPLAY style is warranted for practically every object, and label type within C3D.
