Simply for Curiosity Sake - Defpoints Layer
« on: May 18, 2009, 08:57:43 AM »
Why is it that when a dwg has a table in it, it automatically creates a defpoints layer.

Even if I delete that layer, as soon as a table is edited, the layer shows up again.

BTW, the table is on the '0' layer.

'defpoints' is a layer like "0" in that it is a Layer that Autocad -needs- in order to function in certain situations.

It puts many 'hidden' things on that layer to help it define certain objects.  Tables must be one of them.

'defpoints' is one of those layers you "should not" put your own objects on, or use.  That's typical drafting practice consensus, but obviously subjective.  Personally I use it occasionally for some blocks, because I have things in them used as a "defpoint" type object, but eh.. ymmv.

You'd think with the advent of non-plotting layers, they'd get rid of defpoints.

If it's for behind the scenes stuff, keep it behind the scenes.

The only obvious use I see is in dimensions...a "point" that defines the insertion point for the dimension...
This is hidden but accessible as a grip.  In this regard, I find it useful.  Beyond that, I see no use for it though....enlighten me to others, please?

I've used it for some points that needed to be on a locked layer in a dynamic block, or a reference that needed to be on a non-plot layer, but didn't want to import any new layers.

I've put textual references that didn't want to plot... uh... mainly reference geometry though.

It's perfect for creating a bad layer when XREF'ing into a drawing that does not have Defpoints in it.

This is Autodesk warning - going back to late 2006 - on this issue!

Good link Serge...that and I just feel it's sloppy drafting practice.  YMMV
