Topic: Best Tool for Raster To Vector Conversion

I need to digitize some Maps that have been scanned and saved to .tiff format for later use for GIS purposes.

I tried Raster Design but i dont seem to like it. Is there anything better for the job. I need an algorithm that is smart and get's the job done with as little manual intervention as possible. I dont mean a one clik solution cause that's next to impossible, but i need something that will save me vauable hours.

i've used "adobe streamline" to digitize some signatures for plan stamping... but they had to be massaged quite a bit... it would work on a simple plan... but with crossing lines it a little weak....

Corel Draw works pretty good.

What data do those Maps represent?

One of the best programs I have seen lately is called WiseImage. We use Raster Design for normal editing but the WiseImage software has some excellent capabilities way beyond raster design.

I just tried the demo and i could make good use of it. The vector tools it implements didnt handle my file all that well. My Files are bitonal tiffs on a scale of 1/50.000 of various regions and they're not available to me in another format.

I have yet to try vectormagic/corel draw and this hitachi product.
