we are trying to make the move to civil 3d 09 and i am working on setting up the template (styles, etc.). i noticed that when i started making the point styles for surveying symbols, they do not come it at a scale relative to anything. i will tell it drawing scale and 0.1, but it comes in smaller. i noticed that the place where you would type in the "0.1" is "inches" instead of what i would think, being feet.
i have no idea how to change this. i also noticed that the point styles that exist (storm manhole, etc.) comes in smaller. if i just insert the block for a 20 scale and create a point that will have that style, at 20 scale, it's smaller.
has anyone noticed this? does anyone have any ideas or a solution?
any help would be greatly appreciated. i'm pulling my hair out on this one.
thanks guys

Have you changed the Drawing scale?

You will want to watch The Point of Description Keys tutorial on my web site  http://primeservicesglobal.com/tutorials/Points.zip

I'm fair certain it covers both the scaling and rotation of your symbols using description keys.

And in addition to that, I have an article here that might help:

well, that explains a lot. so i have to create my block small enough to fit in a box that is the specified size in relation to the drawing scale (0.01' or 0.12" x scale)?
so, once i've scaled all my blocks down/up to fit precisely within this bounding box with a height of 0.12", that will fix any size difference b/w a block that is a point marker and a block that is just inserted from tool palettes. speaking of, in a situation where you have to place a block in drawing that was NOT actually located, since c3d automatically scales the points when the drawing scale is changed, should one create a dummy point using the description code (just add "calc" to the end of it or something) (ie: powerpole) so it creates a point, or just insert a regular block (static, not dynamic with drawing as other symbols are)?
that would probably just be a preference choice, i guess. i'm quite sure there will be plenty of regular blocks just placed in a drawing (civil & surveying), but then again, i haven't really used c3d beyond the class and working on the template.

That's about what we do.

We have a point range reserved for points we generate in the office, for just the purpose you describe.  You can also look into using Annotative Blocks, but there's some caveats with those.  We find it easier to just create dummy points most of the time.

cool, glad i'm not the first to think of that. i really felt like that proposal was par with the people that explode blocks and when they want to find a specific block, they have to open an old project that has it in there.
