Missing Fonts??
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:09:13 PM »
Help!!!!!!

I have a user that has a problem with his fonts changing on him.  He says he may have 4 or 5 dwgs open at the same time and when he moves something in the dwg all the fonts change to simplex.

Any idea what this could be?

The paths are correct in the dwg.  It only seems to happen after he moves something and the database gets refreshed.

Thanks,
Will

Dumb question: Are the fonts installed (.TTF) / located in a support path (.SHX)?

What does the Text Style dialog box for those specific text styles show?  Is the font image missing?  Anything out of the ordinary?

Most of the fonts we use are shx fonts and I have checked and they are in the folders.  It seems like everything works for a while and then it just decides they want to go missing.  When you move a piece of text or change the text they go to simplex and the preview in the style box changes as well.  The user has to restart AutoCad and everything will reset to normal.  But then in a little while things will start changing.

when you say your fonts are in folders.....are you saying that they might be path-ed to a network location?
and that this person is losing or changing his drive mapping and thus losing his fonts?

Yes, these fonts are on a server in one folder.  He is able to access everything else on the server so I see no signs of network troubles.

It's not at specific intervals of time.  He said it happened 3 times this afternoon.

So no, I guess I couldn't unless I worked on it for a while.

This might not help you but at my office we have to have the font installed on the local machines as well as the network.

have him/her switch machines with another user for a few hours, see if the problem follows them, or attacks the replacement user too

I hate to say it.....it could be something they are doing...and just don't know it. ;-)

That'd be kinda hard to do.  People don't like to move from their space much less have to work on someone else's computer.  Besides our profiles are not roaming so that wouldn't be too feasible.

It happened again last night before we went home and already started again this morning.  Seems like it is about every hour.  The user told me for now he is not adding any text, but it still messes up when he prints too.

I assume you've done the purge/audit thing to the drawing?

It sounds like a Network problem to me. - (for what that is worth)

As suggested, copy the fonts to a local folder for a while and see if the problem goes away. At a minimum, this could eliminate the network possibility.

I think you need to take over that PC and see IF and or when it happens to you, and then you might have a better idea of the who, what, where, when, and how of the problem.

Better yet, just walk away and pretend it never happened.

Ok.  A couple of more questions.

1) Is the name of the font case specific?  I know some things in Lisp are.  Our font is in all CAPS but the font name in out Style is in lowercase.

2) If you have multiple files open that have the same style name but different fonts associated are there issues?

Remember, these problems are specific to one computer, not the others in our office.

Did the user change the txt.shx of the Standard style to RomanS.shx or a different *.shx font?

No the user hasn't changed the font or style.

A new determination!!  We figured out that one of the half dozen dwgs the user had open was a drawing sent to us from an engineer that created the file in Revit Structures and then converted it to dwg for us.  He hasn't opened any of those files this morning and yesterday afternoon and the problem hasn't happened anymore.

That still doesn't explain why fonts are randomly changing.

I just had him open one of these suspect dwgs while he had other files open to see how long before the fonts started messing up and it was immediate.  Also note that these issues are only cosmetic.  When we close and reopen the dwgs they are fine even when a save is performed.
