Ribbon 2009
« on: July 16, 2008, 02:33:56 AM »
We have just started to use AutoCAD 2009.

Is everybody using the ribbon? Or are most users sticking to the Classic layout?

i tried the ribbon... but prefer the classic toolbars...
the toolbars now take more space than in previous versions to make you use the ribbon  :x :realmad:

I'm using the Ribon, but I mostly use the keyboard for commands, so it doesn't make much difference to me.

Although if you do use the ribbon, it sometimes takes two or three clicks to do something when it used to take one.

I've 'converted' the ribbon into something resembling the 'old' dashboard; and stuck it onto the 2nd screen; along with the properties and layer palettes.

hmm,

I am also trying to convert the ribbon to look similar to my 2008 layout.  Or at least make it look similar and let it have a similar feel to it.

But what does the future hold for the ribbon interface? Will AutoCAD stick to it?  Or will it disappear with the next release?

I reckon they will stick with it, as Autode$k's 3d software portfolio pretty much all use some form of ribbon layout, and i think have done for some time

Not really using the Ribbon, as it was/is miserably added into C3D. The standard menus AND the ribbon both load by default. Now there is some software integration at it's finest.
The ribbon is slower than the standard menus to use. Just another eye candy change to the product, instead of fixing or adding features the users really want or need.

FWIW. I haven't used '09 yet but the ribbon in MS Office isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I find it fairly easy to find things using it. Keep in mind though, I only use an Office app maybe one a week, well not including outlook, which only uses the ribbon sometimes.

Lynn Allen has a tip on her blog today on how to minimize the ribbon.

I couldn't let your comment go by without dissagreeing with it....

I have been using the ribbon in MS Office products for a while now and I still HATE, HATE, HATE it.

Just about the time I got very profecient with the 'classic' setup, they go and change it on my and I have to relearn their product!

Admittedly, I don't like change 'just for the sake of change'.

I ended up putting my most recently used commands on the Quick Access Toolbar.

Willie,

I have 2009 set up exactly the same as I had 2008 set up.....no ribbon. But I do have Properties docked on the right hand side. I find that extremely good.

I am also thinking of going the classic layout.  The idea of doing three clicks and moving the pointer in-between to start a command will be serious time constrain.  I also dock the properties on the right-hand side and with the other dialogs on the second screen on the left-hand side.

Yup... clicked over to the classic 'cos I couldn't get on with the ribbon... with the sytem of work I use (combination of keyboard & icons) it's way faster at the moment. Got rid of the top menu & access it from the top menu browser... also chucked all the file/cut/paste commands up on the Quick access toolbar at the top which has freed up more screen... I've never had such a big screen area  :-)

I got to watch the LT Webcast yesterday and finally got to see the ribbon.

I don't like it. It eats up a lot of real estate. I was telling a coworker that you can set it to 'classic' view. But then got to thinking about it and I'd be willing to bet that within a couple of releases, the 'classic' view will no longer be available.

So, I guess we might as well get used to it from the start, (when we upgrade from 2008).

After learning to minimize the ribbon in Office 2007, I like it better than the older buttons. Seems like the minimized ribbon gives you more real estate and less distraction.

I haven't seen CAD r2009 ribbon yet though, I'd imagine it's a different beast all together.
