Drawing (with image) to PDF or DWF
« on: February 20, 2008, 08:18:32 AM »
Hi

We have drawings that were created with version 2000 with aerial imagery on the background. With version 2000 to 2006 we didnt have any problems plotting to PDF and DWF, but with 2008 we have problems.

We have tried a couple of PDF writers but none seem to work. We have tried to plot to DWF but it also seems not to work.

Any suggestions on how to plot a dwg with images to pdf or dwf?

Thanks
Willie

Sorry, no idea. But thanks for posting this. I have 2007 & was looking for more reasons not to upgrade to 2008.

....but with 2008 we have problems.

What problems?

I can print dwg's containing an image to pdf and dwf just fine in 2008. Using Autodesks drivers, Adobe Pro 8 or a program called PDF Factory.

~Disclaimer~ I'm using ACA and not Vanilla Acad if that makes any difference.

I can echo Steve's results, but I, however, -am- on vanilla 08.

I use aerials, vicinity maps... usually PNGs, sometimes TIF, sometimes JPG (ew), sometimes even a bmp (ew)

What kind of image, what file size of image, what resolution, how is it inserted into your drawing, what are the settings for your drawing's properties for image display... visual style..  object properties of the image... there's many things you could just be overlooking that will intentionally not print the contents of an image.

Can you upload a sample drawing for disection?

Hi Josh and Steve

1. We Load TIFF files in drawing with the image command
2. The Images are very big - See the attached

Attached is the drawing that is giving the problems and a snap shot of my ref. manager.  We have always used tiff and we use them on a weekly basis in drawings.

I think the problem lies with the tiff format and 2008. I have also found that if you select "Plot in background" it creates a pdf/dwf with some of the images on and AutoCAD dont crash.

Thanks

Well the problem shouldn't lie with the TIFF file format as I and many others have no problems using them.

Does this happen with all files or is this the first you've had this problem?

Can you test this in numerous files to verify?

You have about 1109.98 megabytes of TIFF information, I believe you may be overextending your resources.

That might be causing some issues...

Willie,

Did this start when you loaded 2008?
Did it ever work with 2008?
If you create a new drawing and insert this image, will it plot?

Just trying to gather some additional info to help you along.

I'd try a smaller drawing and see if it's still being stubborn.

Hi

We started using AutoCAD 2008 in January 2008. Before 2008, we have used 2006, 2005 and 2000i.  The problems started as soon as we installed 2008 (white bread / vanilla).

With 2000i to ver 2006, we had no problems plotting the drawing to a PDF or DWF. I have even tried to plot it from Trueview, but it also crashes.

We have a HP 5000 Designjet and the drawing plots perfectly to it – no problems.

I don’t think that the size of the images is causing the problems.  We have had drawing with similar sized images attached, that plotted fine without any problems.

My modus operandi will be as follows:

1. We have a couple of computers with Civil 3D on it.  I will try to plot it from there.
2. I think that I must convert all the images to an other format (ie. GIF or JPG).
3. Install 2006 again and pllot it from there - This will be our last resort.

Thanks
Willie

Hi Willie,

I'm quickly running out of suggestions, although I'd be inclined to agree with the previous comments regarding file size. I guess a simple test to put that out of the equation would be to see if you have any success plotting a file with a single small image attached.  :|

What is the image file format, and why do you think converting it into another format is a possible solution?

Have you considered the RAM requirements of 2002 are different than 2008, and that you might be running out of memory when attempting to plot that file with an image?  Also do you have CAD set to use the image application when processing the image file?

Hi Steve(UK) and mjfarrell

The files are in tiff format. I converted them to JPG and re-attached them to the drawing - that didnt solve the problem.

We got the images in SID format and we use mr sid viewer to export them to tiff.  The size of the images have never been a problem (with previous versions of Autocad).  It only takes some time to open the drawing with the images.  We have plotted the same drawing numerous times to PDF and DWF (with the large images attached) with AutoCAD ver 2000i to 2006.  And we didnt had as much RAM and processor speed as we have now.

I think my computer's brain is big enough to plot this drawing with 2008. The spec is as follows:
Windows XP Pro SP 2
Intel Core 2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13Ghz
3.50 GB of RAM
Radeon X1300 Series with 256mb RAM
150GB Harddrive with 117GB free space

Attached is a png image of the layout tab of how the drawing looks in Autocad and a png image of how the drawing have plotted with the "DWG to PDF.pc3" file.  The plot was done with the "Plot in Backgound" option ticked on the plot dialog.

We solve the problem by re-installing AutoCAD 2006 and plotting the drawing from there.

It just mind boggling that AutoCAD 2008 can not plot the same drawing as 2006.

Thanks for all the input and ideas
