(C3D 2008) SP2 released today
« on: October 18, 2007, 07:13:09 PM »
Being the razor's edge kinda person that I am, I have downloaded and installed this already. Many fixes and more stability updates.

In my initial test on a drawing that regularly crashed C3D2008sp1 (as of last night) I was able to do in about 3 minutes what I could not accomplish yesterday. Definitely a good start! :-)

Supposedly the MOO's have been fixed, but haven't yet tested this.

There have been a few reports of the install not working. However, both the C3D & LDT SP2's installed on my machine without a hitch. Although the LDT SP wanted the LDT install DVD while the C3D SP did not.

<Edit>Here's a LINK to the downloads

Who Should Install This Service Pack?
This Service Pack, LDC2008_SP2.exe, is for all versions of AutoCAD Civil 3D Land Desktop Companion 2008 running on English-language and non-English-language operating systems.

Jeff, am I reading this correctly?  That If I am 'only' running C3D then I don't need this patch?

The link I posted has both the C3D & LDC SP's listed. Just make sure to select either the C3D SP2 OR the LDC SP2, or both if you have both installed.

Installed this at home, didn't brick the install  :-), I'll mess with loading some projects this weekend with it.

The big fix areas seem to be Parcels, and some of the Survey atabase functions.  Also some of the Grip edit issues you have had with Grading Features MAY be fixed with this patch as well.

A number of people seem to be having problems with install errors.  And when it happens, they seem to have problems uninstalling/reinstalling.

I think I'll wait a bit and see if they can sort out why it happens for some folk and not others, and how to fix it if it happens.

this is an issue I have with most all SP's, although it clearly states in the README.TXT file that, that is going to happen.....as if anyone actually reads it....So one might ask, if this deficiency is worth noting in the README, why do they not allow the SP to install AND create backup files, or an undo option?

I haven't ever noticed that issue before.

The big one that's annoyed me for years now is the way installing an SP clobbers the user's configuration settings.  Autodesk products are the only products I've ever used that suffer this particular problem.

from README:

Important: You cannot run an automatic uninstall to remove this service pack. To restore your version of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008 to its pre-service pack state, uninstall AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008 and reinstall it.

Yeah I noticed in the readme it should fix one my biggest gripes (grips and the saving after a Undo command).

I'm gonna try this SP out at home this weekend with one of projects that should really put it to the test (giant surface, bunch of grading objects for a bunch of ponds/amenities).

THis is from the readme for SP2, it should alleviate a good portion of this problem:
Quote
Customized support paths are maintained when you apply the service pack.
I haven't noticed any of my preferences being changed on this machine. On my laptop the Toolspace needed the Survey & Toolbox added back, but that was it.

I'm glad they finally did something about that.

I notice they didn't do it for Land Desktop, however.  The LDT 2008 SP2 Readme says this:
Quote
Before applying this service pack, make sure that any customizations made to the user profile (such as, customizations made to the support file search paths, print file customizations, printer support file paths, redirections, custom template settings, and so on) are exported to a secure location, then imported and reapplied after the service pack has been successfully installed.

Installed on my Vista box without a hitch.
But I'm with you sinc, I'll wait a week for the dust to settle before rolling it out.

Have installed and all seems to be stable for now.  No problems during install.  Hopefully not calm before the storm.

I have now installed it on three machines, with three different experiences.  One was error-free, one had an error that seemed to have no effect, and another had several different errors that also seemed to have no effect.

All three seem to be working fine, despite the different experiences in the install (so far, anyway)...

Yes I'm one of those people.

Came up with the error to contact admin or what ever. Now shows that I've been updated to SP2 when I know it hasn't.

Try reinstalling the SP2 it says I'm up to date. Try uninstalling Civil3D completely from Control Panel Remove Programs and it comes up with an error.

I tried logging a support request in subscription centre and can't get that working. I'm just a little frustrated by it all.

Hence why I vented in the Vent section. :-)

Hopefully AutoDESK will come up with a fix soon.

Autodesk has posted an updated version of the patch.

Evidently, this problem was caused by the piece that kept your profiles from being clobbered during install, which I mentioned earlier in this thread.  Their "fix" was to remove this code, so now the updated service pack will NOT keep your profiles during the install.  Make sure you back them up, so you can reload them after installation.

And it looks like the new service pack will not fix the error created by the old one.  You must completely uninstall and reinstall C3D, then apply the updated service pack.

Thanks sinc.

I can only hope I can uninstall C3D completely.

I tried to do that last night a number of times and I kept getting an error.

Thanks again.

It does make me feel better that Autodesk are sorry for the inconvenience.  :|

Well I can't uninstall C3D. When I try to remove C3D in Remove Programs in Control Panel I get an error.

I guess I can either reinstall my whole system or wait for the next SP release.  :x

or,  open the Windows REGISTRY, and delete ALL entries for Civil 3D, delete the Folders on Hard Drive, re-boot
and THEN reinstall C3D without need to reformat machine.

seriously, you can regedit the thing without any worries.  Your just vaporizing an application anyways....

go delete your autocad civil 3d directory in program files

delete the one under your docs and settings for the user including under local settings and app settings if there is one.  no problem, reboot, then install all is fixed.  Good service pack actually no terrible things happening at all for me.  NUMA

check that on stability, things are starting to get a little wobbly.  have had more fatal errors - out of memory in the past few days than the past few weeks.

I've seen the "Error on Save - try running Recover on the drawing" message for the first time since 2007 SP3.

All in all, though, it *seems* to be better overall.  They added some new issues, but removed more issues, I think...

Note that they broke "Stepped Offset" for feature lines - the offset feature line is missing all intermediate elevation points (ones that are not at horizontal PIs).  I think this is the worst problem I've seen so far.

OK, it also seems there may be big problems involved in creating new styles with SP2.

I think they tried to fix the MOO errors, and screwed it up...  Haven't been able to figure out what's happening yet, but it seems like something is going horribly wrong...

Every time I try to edit a child style, it changes the parent.  Anybody else noticing this?

Just went back to a computer that is on SP1, and tried opening the same drawing I'm having issues with.

In SP1, I can create child styles with no problem.  I have also discovered that as long as I create the child style in SP1, I can then edit the style in SP2 with no problem.  However, all child styles created in SP2 are garbage.

This be bad...   :-o

Can you tell what I'm doing with my right hand now?   :kewl:

I also killed and restarted C3D, so I'm chalking this up to one of those bizarre problems that crops up for no apparent reason and goes away the next time C3D is started.  Kind of like how rebooting Windows fixes a lot of problems.
