Whenever I try to update my profile with an avatar, I get a nice "The avatar you have selected is too large, or not an avatar." error. And that got me to wondering what the actual specifications and/or requirements an image had to meet for it to be usable as an avi?

This is a good place to start, but quickly, avatars should be no bigger than 100 x 100 pixels and avi's are not allowed.  Animated Gif's, however, are.

Hehe, thanks for the link, M-dub, for some reason that didn't turn up on my earlier searches. And 'avi' was short for 'avatar' in this case, I wouldn't even think about trying to shoehorn an avi video into an avatar spot.

Sorry to tag onto an old topic - but this is related.

I notice that the avatar size limit is 100x100 pix, so how is it that some members have HUGE avatars..?

I've seen them around,  It might be because they are using a link instead of uploading or because they added theirs before a change to the rules.

By example sinc's avatar is 135x135 pixels.
Doesn't matter much to me, but sometimes these big avatars have scroll bars.

Interesting! I turn off avatars so I never see them. smiley

I think Dan had it right. "or because they added theirs before a change to the rules".

Ahh I see, (I think that change was before my time here), I was just curious, I'd seen a few that were pretty big and just wondered how they'd managed it smiley

Examples:

Dommy2Hotty 156px × 179px
sinc 135px x 135px
Dr. After 125px x 180px
