Topic: Change selection method on the fly

I'm using "entsel" as my selection method b/c I want a custom prompt. But if the user doesn't actually select an object I want to go into a window / crossing mode. I'm basically wanting it to act like "ssget" with a custom prompt. So can I start with "entsel" then if the user doesn't select an entity switch to "ssget" with the picked point as the first point?
