Way too long to open/plot (missing .shp?)
« on: April 20, 2007, 12:23:06 AM »
Here's the latest dilemma:
I'm working with a xref'd topo on a sheet and it is taking 5 minutes to open (yes I watched the clock) and about that to print. We've have great CPU's and printers so that's not the problem. I'm wondering if its the fact that I have to cancel a missing .shp file 5 or 6 times. I've taken the intermediate contours out, so the topo is down to 5MB ( 5,000 kb if I remember right). What little info I can provide is I imagine it was created with a fly by, its a large area, though the contours are annotated with text, not "contour labels" and we're using vanilla 05. So I'm wondering:

Is the missing shp the probable problem?
Is there a way to find what entity needs the shp file and delete them out. I imagine they don't show in the dwg, since its missing the files.
Is there a way to substitute the missing shp files with another? On opening I tried to click on bigfont to substitute, but that did not work.

Any ideas to speed this thing up are appreciated.

You can try FONTALT to substitute a font.

I wonder why a .shp file is missing, because that's a shape/font that hasn't been compiled.

The .shp file may also be some GIS info attached by MAP at some point.  Does the message say it is specifically trying to display a text style?

While fontalt is supposed to work I find it better to manually adjust the font with the missing .shx to one you do have. Format->textstyle, the missing ones usually don't have a preview.

Opps  very sorry I was miss leading, its a .shx file

I'm @ work now so I can be more accurate. The files are AECCLAND.shx (x5) and a TGCDG.shx (x2). Since I do not have those files can they be purged (good or bad idea?)

More appropriately could they be the ones slowing things down so much?

Make copies of your simplex font and rename them to the missing .shx names.  Better yet, copy a font that you don't use that will stand out to see what is there.  Then you can erase or define them as something usable and see if your problems go away.  They may not - I think you have some tiny segmented polylines for your contours that are your real issue.
