*nix server, or NAS using Samba?  Acad reportedly has issues with that that sound like what you are describing.

I will need to chat with our 'services provider' - I dislike outsourced IT for autocad.

Just needed to circumvent them with a licensing issue.....that had me in a IF THEN WHILE loop.

For AutoCAD-Based Products
Displays the Save Drawing As dialog box.
  • If the drawing has never been saved, saves the drawing to a specified file name, and makes it the current drawing file. You can tell whether the current drawing has been previously saved with the DWGTITLED system variable.
  • If the drawing has been previously saved, saves the current drawing to the file name that you specify, but leaves the current drawing unchanged.

Note: The Save option on the File menu, Standard toolbar, or Quick Access toolbar is QSAVE.

For AutoCAD LT
In AutoCAD LT, the SAVE and QSAVE commands are identical.

Good pickup that the OP may be using LT, Jeff.

yes I missed that possibility entirely, I've never used LT and have no idea how it functions.

I'm beginning to suspect his problem is not AutoCAD, but the system he is using to access the file on his network.

As an alternative (until a 'real' solution is obtained) would be redirect the AUTOSAVE to a local directory (Setvar SAVEFILEPATH) and change the SAVETIME setvar to 5 or 10 minutes.  That way you can never lose more than 5 or 10 minutes worth of work.

Despite documentation to the contrary; there does appear to be functional difference between the two commands.
From yesterday, I am relying on SAVE not qsave to actually save my work.

I disagree.
QSAVE saves the current drawing, no questions asked.
SAVE saves the current drawing to a file with the name of your choice (you can choose to overwrite the same file if you want) - but you will always be prompted.

There is not any (or shouldn't be any) functional difference between what gets written to disk, all other things being equal.

Actually, I believe Farrell is correct, in that under the Options menu / Open & Save tab, you have the File Save Incremental save percentage (I believe this started in v2012)

FWIW, ISAVEPERCENT was introduced with AutoCAD R13, Nov. 1994
