(Microstation) Cool trick
« on: February 08, 2007, 11:16:05 AM »
If you'd like to trick your MicroStation (V8 - sorry, Dub!) into accepting AutoCAD commands, there's a variable called MS_DWG_COMMANDPREFIX that sets a user-defined character (ours is \) to precede AutoCAD commands in the key-in window.

For example, in our case, the keyin \line would invoke the line command, \copy the copy command, etc. BTW, the key-in window is found under the utilities drop-down.

I hope this helps somebody out there - I could have DEFINITELY used this a few months ago!

PS...enter your desired character between quotes i.e. "\"

No Probs!  :)

IT guy is in here right now and we're discussing the software we're licensed to use vs the software we're actually using.  (There may be changes on the horizon, but I ain't gonna hold my breath)

Thanks for the cool tip Kindra!

Does this mean M-Dub might be able to go to the Bentley Conference? :-)

Nope, just talkin' about AU and BC here, Greg, but I bet those would all be fun too.

Does this variable remain permanently?  I understand that this is not a universal translator but does it understand only certain core commands or most for which there is a corresponding MS function?  I do believe there is now a chance I can do something with MS V8 other than accidently make a line after 20 attempts only to erase it before I figure out how I performed either function.

This is listed as a 'System' variable, as opposed to a 'User' or 'Project' variable. I didn't try ALL AutoCAD commands, but every one I tried, worked. My 'customization' knowledge is in its infancy, but it's worked for me so far. Check it out and let me know how it works for you, Dino.

Mine too, currently :-(
But I do know it (XM version) will read your PGP file :-)
The XM version (latest revision...this really matters) does do pretty well handling most of the autocad objects. All though their version of hotkeys is way too confusing to remember.

Ok Arizona... I guess I will dig out my id & password and download the latest XM version tonight.
so I know... what is the lasest revison number with all the dots...

and just asking a uneducated question, V8 drawings and XM drawings are compatible?
ie: someone with v8.1 will be able to open an XM drawing?

Thanks,
Pieter

I'm currently testing XM on old 08.XX files so you shouldn't have any problems.
