I am looking for some guidance in procurement of new computer systems for my office. What I am looking for are systems that are in the $2000 range with the following minimum specs:

Intel based 3.0Ghz
800Mhz FSB
512 DDR 400
128M Video
80gb+ SCSI HD
100mbs LAN

Also what specs can you give me on 21" LCD TFT flat panel monitors?

Ultimately I would like these to be from a national company that I can get pissed at when they have problems.

I would welcome any online reviews as well.

Thanks

Keith,

depending on how many system's you need to buy. Take a look at Dell.
Yeah i know everyone and their brother are getting them.
If you are looking for one or two, Dell has their refurbished system's.
Each one is unique with OS and ram etc. So if you wanted 30 of them it would take a while to sift them out.

I picked up a dual xeon @ 2.4Ghz and 1GB of Ram.
Got a crappy 32MB video card but I will be ordering a replacement
one day. Anyways I picked the system up for about half of what it would
have been if I ordered it new and it still has the full warranty etc.

I'd rather have a good 19" monitor and put the extra money in more dram, or a cd burner for file transfer.

DVD+RW is a given .... and the memory is a pittance in the overall scheme of things.. I can get 512mb DDR400 for around $75 .... the 21" monitor IS NOT NEGOTIABLE

After seeing T Bears 21" with the amount of room he had for buttons,I'm quite envious and now contentplating buying one even if I have to make do with a refurbished CRT. :)

I have been happy with this workstation and the price is nice......a little extra cash for a kick ass display.

We are also looking at getting some flat panel monitors from Dell as well.
They seem pretty ok and takes out the middleman if it does fail.
IIRC they have a 22" which is a 21" diagonal(almost square) flat panel.
I think the price was under $1,000.00 they were either running or are running a special with buy 3 and get the fourth free...

Do you really need an 80GB drive? Aren't you attached to a server. The price of an 80gb scsi drive is way up there!

Actually ... our server is merely another workstation that is not being used by a person.

I got a pretty good quote today...

2.8Ghz Xeon
1GB DDR
NVidia Quadro4 980XGL
72GB SCSI
10/100/1000 ethernet
XP Pro

$2463.00

Add to that possibly dual processors +$300
and
a 23" TFT LCD Flat panel DVI monitor +$1699

Puts me at $4462 X 2

or

$8924.00

Well, I could drop a few things that I don't absolutely have to have... such as dual Xeon processors and SCSI ... then I am at:

2.8 P4
1GB DDR
80GB ATA100
NVIDIA Quadro NVS 280
10/100/1000 ethernet
XP Pro

Now I am at a mere $1243.00
plus a 21" crt monitor $499.00

for a total of $1742 x 2

or $3484.00

but hell as long as the boss is buying why not get the goods...

CAB to answer your question ... I am looking really hard at a 23" TFT LCD DVI flat panel from HP but at $1699 I am wondering if I will get it...

AOC makes pretty decent flan screen CRT monitors and I can get a 21 for around $500 but I really really want that 23" flat panel....

Oh and did I say that I really really want a flat panel ?

I missed that link, which one is it? Or were you talking about crt's.

I'd love an LCD but i'm looking in the 500 - 800 dollar range..
I hate the idea fo having a 21" monolith  on my desk but $1600 is
too much for me when $500 may get the job done.

It looks like a pretty good CRT monitor... I am not familiar with that particular brand of monitor, but if it performs at the level shown it would be a decent choice for a CRT.

In CAD I always try to find at least a .22 or lower for dot pitch and the resolution and refresh rate is also key. You may find refresh rates as low as 60Hz on some higher resolution monitors and that simply is not good enough for me. I like the 75Hz refresh rate at max resolution, but it would be great to find something pushing 85Hz or even 100Hz now that would be sweet....

The price tag is also good, I have seen less expensive monitors with a tradeoff of dot pitch and/or max resolution. Just to put it in perspective, if I can save 15% on a monitor by sacrificing a higher resolution and limiting myself to say 1600X1200 and get a refresh rate of 100Hz or even as high as 130Hz I would do it in a minute...
It looks like a good buy though...
Cab have you tried looking at the marketpro computer shows web site and finding out when the computer shows are near you and see if you can find something there...

Here are the refresh rates

1920x1440 @80Hz
1800x1440 @80Hz
1856x1392 @82Hz
1792x1344 @85Hz
1600x1200 @95Hz
1280x1024 @110Hz
1152x864 @129Hz
1024x768 @144Hz
800x600 @160Hz
640x480 @160Hz

specs

I don't think i can wait much longer, i got the itch &  i'm using a 15".

I was thinking i would use 1280x1024
I am using 1024x768 now.

I got a 19" flat panel mon here at home and i love it. (More then i need ...Its great!)

I got a Mitsub. LCD dimond point  -I cant remeber the model number- down stairs and i would recomend that one to everyone. The pic is crystal clear. It ran me about 700 and its got a  digital cable hookup. (Damn those cables are expensive ..i dont have one of those. :P)

So i would say a 19 is fine.

Well, the new pooter arrived. Dell Precision 360 Minitower, 3.00GHZ P4, 512MB, 400Mhz SDRAM (little small, but ok), 21 INCH MONITOR, nVidia QuadroFX500, 128MB graphics card, 40GB hard Drive, 3.5" floppy (don't say it !) 48x/32x/48x CDRW, Iomega ZIP drive, Optical mouse, Windows XP Pro, Dell A425 speakers, MS Office Pro XP, Adobe Acrobat 6 standard and a performance USB Keyboard.
I really don't want to give up my amber monitors, but I guess I'll get used to the 21" MONITOR.
