Outline Pline shapes. Any Q&D ideas?

Suppose I have a bunch of adjacent/partly overlapping rectangles (LWplines basically). Now I want to create a common outline. Do I have to convert the rectangles into 2d solids and use Union,  or is there a more simple solution?
