AutoCAD and fragmented disk?
« on: October 11, 2011, 01:41:14 PM »
Has anyone heard of or ran across that AutoCAD causes disk fragmentation more so than other programs?

I am being told this by a non-user.

AutoCAD and its brethren are more complex than the commonly used programs like Office so it wouldn't suprise me, especially if everything was being worked on local to the hard drive (temp files, backup CUIx files, saving multiple copies of files, DWL/2 files, BAK files, etc.).
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.

try {GreatPower;}
   catch (notResponsible)
      {NextTime(PlanAhead);}
   finally
      {MasterBasics;}

Having worked with AutoCAD since the old DOS days I can say for certain that AutoCAD makes your drive look like Swiss cheese! When AutoCAD opens it not only opens a DWG file but a host of Temp files. If everything goes right these files close and are never seen, however if you have a breakdown of some sort they are left open until the next time you open that drawing.

In the old FAT 32 days it was necessary to clean and De-frag your hard drive almost once a week. Now with the NTSF system it is not quite so necessary, but you might notice some system improvements if you do defrag every once in a while.

I have spoken with people who say that this is a wasted effort, and others who swear they defrag every week. I know that I do not do it often enough. When my system starts to drag I take the time to organize the hard drive. It does help.

FWIW,  My Win 7's defrager is scheduled for once a week.
