Point Cloud
« on: August 16, 2010, 07:39:36 AM »
I'm toying with making a pointcloud entity for Bricscad. So far I can import las points.

Questions:
Do you use them?
What are point clouds good for?
How many points do you need? Currently I can import about 2.5 million points in a couple of seconds. The graphics start to get real heavy after 7 million or so, is this enough?
What tools do you need to party with a point cloud?

TIA  :-)

We convert our point clouds to 3d models.
Everyone has a photographic memory, Some just don't have film.
They say money can't buy happiness, but it can buy Bacon and that's a close second.
Sometimes the question is more important than the answer. (Thanks Kerry for reminding me)

Interesting, do you use any special tools to do this? How many points do you normally work with?
Thanks

Civil 3D [now] has the ability to import .LAS files to create a surface using the point cloud object.

I think the challenge will be in keeping the speed up!

See discussion in LandLubber regarding Speeding up Massive Surface....http://www.theswamp.org/index.php?topic=34470.msg397840#new

We have our stations laser scanned and converted to 3d, then we design on top of that

I'm not sure how to determine how many points we have, how would I find that?

Cmdr, don't they groom those point clouds a bit for you before you get your 3d models out of them?
asking as the original total point number may not be knowable, if they are

We use Cyclone/CloudWorx as well, with mixed results.  7 million points is about a medium sized scan based on past work, which is mostly in refinery work.  The surveyor takes multiple scans from different locations then uses the software to lump everything together and sends us the result.  We use CloudWorx to overlay the point clouds into CADWorx and design the piping over top of that.  CADWorx has an add-in which allows the use of a total station or point cloud as an input rather than just a mouse; look into a product called "FieldPipe".

Keep in mind, that different LIDAR systems (Faro, Leica, etc.) make heavy use of custom data formats.  New releases of AutoCAD can read the Faro stuff natively but not the Leica files.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.
