Rollup Overhead Door?
« on: April 28, 2006, 08:43:44 AM »
I need to draw a 'Roll up overhead garage door' to add to an existing floor plan of a bldg.

Have any of you drawn one of these or know what they are supposed to look like from an overhead view?

I thought about drawing a rectangle with the dash line, but don't want to fight the AutoCad linetype scale problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

gee I usually draw the plan outline with a dashed line.

What "AutoCad linetype scale problem" is it you have to "fight"??

In the past when I have drawn a dashed line while in MSpace, then scale it to .5 or so, everytime I would go back & forth between MSpace & PSpace, the 'appearance' on screen & plotting would change - even though the linetype scale stayed at .5.

I posted this problem on the forum & was told that this is a 'long standing AutoCad problem'.

So has this been fixed since Rev LT98?

Depending on how much you need for detail in your drawing.  Search for an overhead door manufacturer on the web.  They usually have cad details of various elevations and details.  The manufacturer will base our drawings on is "Overhead Door Corp".  There is a bunch of manufacturers out there.

By "scale it to .5" do you mean change the elements linetype scale to .5?? If so, yikes I'll pass on commenting and allow someone else to thread-jack that?

It's not a problem, it's just how it works.  If you're going to be plotting from PS set PSLTSCALE to 1 and LTSCALE to some factor** of 1.  If you're going to be plotting from MS, set LTSCALE to some factor** of your plotscale.  No problem no fight.

**factor - some folks use 1 times dimscale/plotscale, some use 0.5, still other use 0.3 or 0.3333

I concur with Randy - dashed outline of the "box" that the rollup goes into.  Depending on the building construction, you may need channel iron door jambs to mount the rollup to.  Or if a masonry or concrete building, you can mount the rollup to the face of the wall.  If you want to get fancy, you can call out the side of door that you want the chain operator on.

What kinda building are you doing?

This is a drawing I am working on. This is all they get for residential.
I set PSLTSCALE to one for all PS tabs so the LTscale is same as you see in model space.

When we draw roll-up doors for truck docks, all we show is a 2" rectangle that is on the inside face of the wall and it would extend about 6" on each side. Much like Cab's, but on the inside of the wall and wider. CAB is also showing where the door ends up when in the upright position. With a roll-up door, it will end up in a 18" circle depending on the height of the door. Unless you need to show what is happening above the door, there is no benefit. You may or may not have a reflected ceiling plan for this area and that is where you would see where the door is stored if anyplace else. But, if we did show the storage area of the door, then a dashed rectangle would be adequate.

Here are a couple of overhead coiling doors we have used in the past:

Regular overhead doors.  We used their commercial doors on fire stations.  They have residential too.  I find them to be more durable than the regular residential grade doors.

They normally have some sort of CAD file you can use.  Section views and details of the jambs if you need them.
For plan view, I just use a dash/ hidden line.
Not sure I get you but why don't you set your ltscale of your model space to whatever you need and then set the ltscale of your paperspace you print from to "1".  Normally that seems to work.  Or maybe I'm not understanding.
