haha, Here is my best description

ObjectARX is an object oriented c++ Autocad Interface that gives direct access to the drawing database and the AutoCAD application.

You need Autocad, the ARX sdk, and VC++ v6 for Acad 2000-2002 and VC++ v7.0 for ACAD 2004-up and a knowledge of c++

You cannot really substitute compilers. There is a work around or two but they are rather long explanations. You are better off, in my opinion with the correct compiler.

Good job Swift, short and sweet!

Basically you get to use the same (or most of the) libraries and enviroment that Autodesk use to create AutoCAD to customise it for your own application.

It may be forceable to work with ACAD 2k (no way with '04 up though, as far as I know) but I haven't tried it.

By default it will not work though.
