Title: What's your preference - AutoCAD 2019 | 2020 | 2021?
Post by: MP on May 14, 2020, 11:45:43 AM
Feel free to ante up any experiences you've have had with any of these versions that might prove helpful to anyone who stumbles onto this thread.  :-)

Thanks!

Michael.

I'm running 2019 at the office and 2021 at home. I find 2021 to be a bit laggier with xrefs ( reloading, attaching etc ). Really I could still be using 2008 just fine  :-D

The odd number curse prevails! :2funny:

(sometimes I pine for the stability of ver 14.01 :?)

2021 installed faster than the other two. It opens quicker and runs smooth.
The handful of added features are ones users have wanted for a long time.
I've used Break at point often and having it as a command instead of a Break macro allows me to simply hit enter to repeat.
The added option for Trim and Extend makes those commonly used commands quicker and easier.
Being able to see xref changes as I update my drawing is nice as well.

While r13 was my least favorite version like all others it was an upgrade to (smother running) r12 that added a lot of cool features. (edit) ver 14.01 was the best of any version ever and for those of us that worked with contours the addition of lwpolylines shrank drawing sizes consideratly.
The only software upgrades I can remember that weren't worth upgrading to were DOS 4.0 which used so much resources most powerful DOS wouldn't even run on it and Dbase 4.0.

I went from 2004 right to 2014 in that year, and that jump alone was a breath of fresh air.

Right now, 2021 is installed and running:

Drawing History - Something I haven't had to use yet, but with the breakneck speed at which our clients change things, I can see it possibly saving me the trouble of keeping multiple versions of things.
Performance Enhancements - I'm heavy on the 3D side of things and using a 16 core processor, so taking advantage of multi-core is nice.
Purge Redesign - Getting used to it and it's decent.

There were a few hiccups in lisp routines and a plot file that needed an adjustment going from 2020 to 2021, but those were minor.

Pretty smooth sailing so far.

I have stopped at 2015 and still have it installed for when I need to to a change sketch and a designer is not within the hooks reach.   Starting to get some hiccups with opening a drawing from a newer version.

My favorite is in 2014.  Maybe it is the 14 in 2014.

Our entire office is upgrading to 2021. The #1 reason is because with 2021 we can use Map3D instead of just the vanilla version.

BricsCAD!  Ooops, sorry. I upgraded AutoCAD from v2019 to v2021 - 2021 seems faster to open drawings, especially on a cold start and 2D graphics performance seems better than 2019. I have to say the upgrade process was totally painless which is not how I remember it. At least they have stopped breaking keyboard shortcuts and "moving my cheese". Hell, they don't even bother changing the logo these days.

But BricsCAD opens faster on a cold start. IMHO BricsCAD (at least from v19) has been a solid pick, at least for my 2D drawings. Also from V19 the .NET compatibility has been really good, I ported CAD Replace (https://www.cadreplace.com/) from AutoCAD to BricsCAD v19 in a couple of hours, it pretty-much just worked. They are VERY welcoming to plugin developers and there's no ADN fees to pay (ADN is more expensive than MSDN - WHY?). So there's my preference. </rant>

R14 was the bomb! I started on it when I was around 15 years old lol. I am curious to see how fast it runs on todays technology. lol.

2015! I will vote for 2021 since people are saying the performance improved a bit. I want to believe that recent releases are rock bottom and it can only go up.

To add to what other's have mentioned: When you try an alternative CAD product you'll realize just how much ACAD's performance as slowed over the years.
