Here is something I just tried and it worked, we had a bunch of drawings that had mleaders that called out “CAT 6 in ¾” CONDUIT” and needed to remove the “in ¾” CONDUIT”.
I did the following
- Open new empty drawing
- Used XA(XREF ATTCH) command(you can attach more than one drawing at a time)
- Selected all 60 sheets
- Unchecked all “Specify On-Screen” checkboxes so it would not prompt me for insertion point, etc… for each drawing.
- Used FIND command(Made sure I had search xrefs option checked)
- Did a Replace and it updated text and saved drawings.
- Charged job 4 hours
- Plan on spending next 4 hours watching cat videos on you tube

Nice .. glad it worked for you :) .. I've had CAD crash more often than not when doing a find and replace within xrefs.
