I recently graduated from school with a Bs in Geoscience. I have been looking for a job, but nothing is available in areas where I want to live for my current skill set and experience. I was thinking that working for a civil firm might be my best bet, as I can use my AutoCAD experience while working towards something with my new degree. The problem is no one will give me a chance since I do not have Civil3D experience. I was able to pick up Unigraphics (3D parametric program for machine parts) while on the job and become productive, but that does not seem to matter.
My question is: What would be the best way to get Civil3D experience? I have seen some online courses ranging from $20 / video to $1800 for 5 courses where the last class will prepare me for getting a certificate from AutoDesk. There isn't a college class where I am at until fall. Get a student version and a textbook?
Thanks in advance.

Check out my tutorials...they are free...

Also, it isn't that hard to pass the Civil 3D certification exam...
not there is a lot of value in it other than it would show that you understand the application.

Michael,
I saw your site with the tutorials, and I am glad there is that. Thanks. I guess I have to see if I can run Civil3D on my computer (hasn't been upgraded in awhile) and if I can get a student copy.

I learn Civil 3D by recreating a project that was designed with and other engineering software package. (Civil Designer - Michael might know it.)
I took me sometime. I created all the styles of the profile views etc. to match the drawings that I had.
Maybe if you can get hold of a small subdivision project's drawings and recreate the streets, water, sewer etc drawings.

Thanks, Willie. That sounds like a good idea.
