Title: I need your opinions
Post by: M-dub on November 21, 2003, 11:02:51 AM
Although you all may not understand some of what I'm talking about, does the following message make sense to you?  I'm ready to submit these drawings and want to make sure future CADdies don't F them up.
(BTW - Sorry about the CAPS...I ain't re-typing that sh!te...)

Quote
NOTE TO CAD
1.  PAY STRICT ATTENTION TO LAYERS BEING USED.

2.  ONLY MAIN TRUNK CABLES ARE PLACED ON SPECIFIC 'COM-___' LAYERS.  ALL DROP LINES ARE TO BE PLACED ON THE SAME LAYER AS THE DEVICE BEING CONNECTED.  THE DROP LINES ARE THEN GIVEN THE SAME PROPERTIES AS THE TRUNK CABLE.  FOR EXAMPLE, THE ETHERNET TRUNK CABLE IS ON THE COM-ETHERNET LAYER WITH THE COLOUR AND LINETYPE SET TO BYLAYER.  THE DROP LINES CONNECTING TO A PLC-5/40E WILL GO ON THE DEVICE-PLC LAYER WITH THE COLOUR SET TO BLUE AND THE LINETYPE SET TO DASHED2 (COM-ETHERNET LAYER PROPERTIES).  THIS IS DONE NOT ONLY TO KEEP THE DRAWING UNIFORM, BUT IS ALSO TO KEEP IT 'TIDY' WHEN CERTAIN LAYERS ARE FROZEN.  (WHEN THE DEVICE-PLC LAYER IS FROZEN, THERE WILL NOT BE ETHERNET AND DH+ LINES STICKING OUT, NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING.)

(THIS NOTE IS TO REMAIN ON THE "NO-PLOT" LAYER AND IS NOT TO BE DELETED, FROZEN OR TURNED OFF)

Thanks a lot!
Mike

Sounds fine to me. Apparently you've had problems in the past?

Well, I suppose you could say that....
It's just that this group of drawings goes against the grain as far as "normal" cadding.  Normally, we try to always put stuff on a certain layer and leave the other properties as BYLAYER.  As you read above, it's quite a change from that and I just want to make sure that everyone who works on these drawings in the future knows what to do...

Thanks guys

Actually, it's good news!  If Dent can understand it, I don't think I need any more replies!

I'm not banking on that, but at least I've proven my due diligence.

You can lead a horse to water...
But you can't make him follow simple f'ing instructions!

actually, last time I checked, a horse would require TWO pairs! :)

Why don't you create a couple simple routines to set this layering for them? Or you could make a custom pulldown menu to do this. These two items would be easily distributable to whomever you are trying to get to adhere to standards.  :D

Here is one I use daily for lateral lines.
Code: [Select]

(defun c:ss () ;Shrub lateral
  (setvar 'plinegen 1)
  (setvar 'cmdecho 0)
(setvar 'plinewid (* (getvar "dimscale") 0.0125))
  (command ".-layer" "make"     "0280-shrub-lateral"
  "color" "6"     ""  ""
  "pline"
 )
  (princ)
)
(c:ss)

Thanks a lot Ron,
However, once I'm done with these drawings, there's a good chance that they will never be updated again.  Plus, they'll be distributed to each brewery across Canada, so I would find that to be difficult to manage...
Great idea though!
Cheers!

OH! I forgot your line of work! Then line #1 needs to be changed to:

1.FIRST DRINK 4 SIX PACKS. EH!

That should make them compliant.

(Ending a sentance with an "EH!" is mandantory in Canada, isn't it? Or has it been changed to "OUI"?)

Yes, it is absolutley manditor-eh.  As manditory as it is to say "I love you too, Sis" after making love in the south...

I tend to find that draughtsmen will stick to those constraints, but as soon as a service crops up that hasnt been considered and given a layer name/properties,they will go about it their own way and try something that they think is best! Its also a question of draughtsmen getting used to the standards, once theyve done it a few times and theyre drawings are checked it should become second nature.Well youd like to think! :)

M-DUB, that's Arkansas. In Alabama it's "I love you to mom." In Mississippi it's "Baaaaa!". In Louisiana it's, "Bend that Yankee over again!".

Now, no one said anything about Florida, only because I haven't figured that state out yet.....Unless it would be "Take yer teeth out  grandpa, my grunion needs to run again"
